Understanding Deoghar Baidyanath Dham Shravani Mela

Situated in the Santhal Parganas division of Jharkhand, **Deoghar** ("Abode of Gods") hosts **Baba Baidyanath Dham**, the 5th sacred Jyotirlinga and one of the 51 Shakti Peethas (where Sati's heart fell).

During the holy month of Shravan, over 5 to 8 million saffron-clad **Bol Bam** pilgrims trek barefoot for 105 kilometers along a sand-strewn path from **Sultanganj Uttorvahini Ganga** in Bihar to Deoghar, carrying holy Ganges water in brass pots (*Kanwars*) to perform Jalabhishekam on the Swayambhu Kamada Lingam.

The Legend of Ravana, Lord Vishnu & Kamada Lingam

According to Shiva Purana, Demon King Ravana performed severe penance at Mount Kailash, cutting off his ten heads one by one to offer to Lord Shiva. Pleased with his devotion, Shiva cured Ravana's wounds like a divine physician (*Baidya*) and granted him the supreme **Kamada Atmalinga** to take to Lanka, under one strict condition: the Lingam must never be placed on the ground during transit.

Fearing Lanka's invincibility, the Gods requested Lord Vishnu to intervene. Lord Varuna entered Ravana's stomach causing urgent water pressure. Lord Vishnu appeared disguised as a Brahmin cowherd named Baiju. When Ravana handed the Lingam to Baiju, Vishnu set it on the ground at Deoghar. The Lingam anchored permanently into the Earth. Enraged, Ravana pressed his thumb onto the Lingam, leaving an indentation that remains visible today!

1. Kamada Lingam

The wish-fulfilling Jyotirlinga bearing Ravana's thumb impression on top.

2. Baiju Bheel Shrine

Named after Baiju cowherd who rediscovered and offered daily worship to the Lingam.

3. Red Ribbon Binding

Red silk threads connecting the tops of Shiva and Parvati temples symbolizing eternal divine union.
