Understanding Somnath in Shravan

Shri Somnath Jyotirlinga, situated on the shores of the roaring Arabian Sea at Prabhas Patan, Veraval, Gujarat, holds the supreme position as the First (#1) Aadi Jyotirlinga among all 12 sacred shrines of Lord Shiva.

In North India Purnimanta calendar followed during Shravan (July 29 to August 28, 2026), hundreds of thousands of pilgrims flock to Somnath for the holy **Triveni Sangam dip**, experience the evening **Arabian Sea Somnath Arati**, and undertake the coastal circuit to **Nageshwar Jyotirlinga** and **Dwarka Jagat Mandir**.

Moon God (Soma) & Eternal Resurrection

According to Shiva Purana, Moon God (*Chandra* or *Soma*) married 27 daughters of Prajapati Daksha. However, due to his favoritism towards Rohini, Daksha cursed Soma to lose his divine luster and wither away. Soma performed intense penance at Prabhas Patan, whereupon Lord Shiva appeared and blessed him to wax and wane every 15 days, founding the **Somnath Jyotirlinga** (*Lord of the Moon*).

1. Aadi Jyotirlinga

It is the primary source of all 12 Jyotirlingas, revered in Rigveda, Skanda Purana, and Mahabharata.

2. Eternal Resurrection

Rebuilt 7 times across Yugas (Gold by Soma, Silver by Ravana, Wood by Krishna, Stone by Kumarapala, & present Chalukya style by Sardar Patel in 1951).

3. Kailash Mahameru Prasad

The temple structure stands 155 feet high with a 10-ton stone Kalash spire and a 27-foot tall golden flagstaff (*Dhwaja*).

Triveni Sangam & Deotsarg Teerth Playbook

Triveni Sangam in Prabhas Patan is the holy confluence of three sacred rivers — **Hiran**, **Kapila**, and **Saraswati** — meeting the vast Arabian Sea. Taking a holy dip here before entering Somnath temple is considered spiritually purifying.

🌊 Sangam Holy Dip

Located 1.5 km from Somnath main temple. Changing rooms and boating facilities available at the riverbank.

🪔 Deotsarg Teerth

Situated on Hiran riverbank where Lord Krishna departed for His heavenly abode (*Nijdham Prasthan*) under a banyan tree.

🪨 Bhalka Tirth

Located 4 km away, where the hunter Jara struck Lord Krishna's foot; features a beautiful reclining marble idol of Lord Krishna.

Bana Stambh (Arrow Pillar to South Pole)

An Uninterrupted Ocean Line to Antarctica

Erected on the sea protection wall of Somnath Temple compound, **Bana Stambh** (Arrow Pillar) is an ancient astronomical pillar. The arrow on top points toward the sea with a Sanskrit inscription:

आसमुद्रांत दक्षिणध्रुव पर्यंत अबाधित ज्योतिर्मार्ग॥

Geographical Fact: If you travel in a straight line from Somnath along the direction indicated by the arrow, you will NOT encounter a single piece of land until you reach **Antarctica (South Pole)** thousands of kilometers away! How ancient Indian astronomers determined this zero-landmass ocean corridor centuries before satellite mapping remains a mind-boggling mystery.
