Understanding Trimbakeshwar in Shravan

Shri Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga, nestled at the foothills of the lush green Brahmagiri mountain in Trimbak town (28 km from Nashik, Maharashtra), holds the 10th spot among the 12 Jyotirlingas. It is universally renowned as the birth site of the holy river **Godavari** (also known as *Gautami Ganga* or *Dakshin Ganga*).

In the Amanta Hindu Calendar followed in Maharashtra (running from August 13 to September 11, 2026), millions of pilgrims gather at Trimbakeshwar for holy dips at **Kushavarta Kund**, perform Vedic **Kalsarp Shanti pujas**, and trek the 750 steps of Brahmagiri mountain to Gangadwar.

Sage Gautama, Godavari & Trimurti Crown

According to Shiva Purana and Brahma Purana, Sage Gautama performed severe penance on Brahmagiri hill during a 100-year drought. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva summoned Goddess Ganga to flow down as River Godavari. Sage Gautama encircled the waters with sacred Darbha grass (*Kusha*), creating **Kushavarta Kund**.

1. Three-Faced Trimurti

Unlike single Lingam shrines, the cavity contains 3 small thumb-sized Lingams representing Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Rudra (Shiva).

2. Golden Crown (Rajat Mukut)

The Trimurti Lingams are adorned with a studded golden crown (*Tridev Mukut*) during Sawan Somvars and Mondays between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM.

3. Constant Natural Stream

Water continuously trickles from the top of the cavity onto the three Lingams, originating directly from subterranean streams of Godavari.

Kushavarta Kund Holy Snan Playbook

Kushavarta Kund is a massive stone tank built in 1750 by Maratha Sardar Shrimant Shinde. It is considered the official consecrated origin site of River Godavari on earth. Taking a holy dip here before entering the Trimbakeshwar temple is believed to wipe away sins of seven lifetimes.

🌊 Morning Holy Dip

Best timings: 4:30 AM to 7:00 AM. Separate changing rooms provided for men and women around the stone arches.

🪔 Godavari Arati

Grand evening Ganga-Godavari Arati takes place daily at Kushavarta Kund at 7:00 PM during Shravan with floating brass lamps.

💧 Jalabhishek Vessel

Pilgrims fill sacred Godavari water in copper lotas at Kushavarta Kund to carry for Jalabhishek inside Garbhagriha.

Kalsarp Shanti & Narayan Nagbali Puja Guide

Why Trimbakeshwar is India's #1 Center for Kalsarp & Nagbali

Due to the presence of the Trimurti Lingam and the cosmic flow of Godavari, Trimbakeshwar is ordained in ancient scriptures (*Skanda Purana*) as the exclusive site for performing **Kalsarp Shanti**, **Narayan Nagbali**, and **Tripindi Shraddha** pujas.
