Understanding Mahakaleshwar in Shravan

Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, situated on the banks of the sacred Shipra river in Ujjain (ancient *Avantika*), Madhya Pradesh, is the 3rd among the 12 Jyotirlingas. Lord Mahakal is regarded as the eternal King (*Raja*) of Ujjain, where no worldly ruler stays overnight out of deep spiritual reverence.

Visiting Mahakaleshwar during Shravan (July 29 to August 28, 2026) is considered the pinnacle of Shiva worship. Devotees witness the world-famous 4:00 AM Bhasma Aarti and join millions lining the streets for the grand Sawan Somvar Mahakal Sawaris (royal palanquin processions).

Dakshinamurti Jyotirlinga & King of Avantika

According to Shiva Purana, when the demon Dushana tormented the pious residents of Avantika, Lord Shiva manifested as Mahakal from the earth, consuming the demon with a single roar of cosmic fire.

1. Dakshinamurti (South-Facing)

Mahakaleshwar is the ONLY Jyotirlinga facing South. South is the direction of Yama (Death); facing South symbolizes Shiva's absolute victory over death.

2. Swayambhu (Self-Manifested)

The Lingam derives power from within (*Swayambhu*), unlike other shrines installed by humans or devas. It radiates unceasing cosmic energy.

3. Three-Tier Structure

The temple features three levels: Mahakaleshwar at ground level, Omkareshwar at upper level, and Nagchandreshwar at top level (open only on Nag Panchami).

The 4:00 AM World-Famous Bhasma Aarti

Bhasma Aarti Rules & Booking Playbook 2026

The Bhasma Aarti takes place daily from 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM. Fresh cow dung ash (*Vibhuti*) is applied to the Jyotirlinga amidst roaring chants of Damaru drums and Vedic hymns.
