Understanding Kedarnath in Shravan

Kedarnath Dham, located at an altitude of 3,584 meters (11,759 feet) in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, is the highest among the 12 Jyotirlingas and the premier shrine of the Char Dham circuit. Nestled against the majestic backdrop of the Kedarnath peak and Kedar Dome glaciers, the temple stands on the banks of the roaring Mandakini river.

Visiting Kedarnath during the holy month of Shravan (July 29 to August 28, 2026) is considered exceptionally auspicious. Devotees offer पवित्र गंगाजल (holy Ganges water collected from Haridwar or Rishikesh) to Lord Kedar in special Sawan Somvar Jalabhishek rituals.

Pandavas, Nandi Bull & Miracle of Bhim Shila

The sacred history of Kedarnath weaves together Mahabharata lore and modern miraculous events:

1. Pandavas' Penance

After the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva's blessings to cleanse the sin of Gotra Vadha. Shiva disguised Himself as a divine bull and grazed in Garhwal Himalayas to elude them.

2. Panch Kedar Formation

Bheema recognized the divine bull and held its tail. Lord Shiva dove into the earth; His triangular hump remained at Kedarnath, arms at Tungnath, face at Rudranath, belly at Madhyamaheshwar, and hair at Kalpeshwar.

3. Miracle of Bhim Shila (2013)

During the catastrophic 2013 flash floods, a massive boulder rolled down from Kedarnath peak and stopped right behind the temple, splitting the raging waters and protecting the 1,200-year-old stone temple without a scratch!

The Panch Kedar Shrines

Q: What is the significance of the Bhim Shila stone behind the temple?
Bhim Shila is the miraculous boulder that rolled down during the 2013 flash floods and diverted the raging waters away from the stone temple, saving it completely intact. Devotees worship Bhim Shila as a divine protector.

Q: Is a medical fitness test compulsory for Kedarnath trek?
While a formal CHC is not mandatory like Amarnath, medical checkposts at Sonprayag and Gaurikund screen elderly trekkers for high blood pressure and oxygen levels before allowing ascent.
Q: What are the accommodation options at Kedarnath top?
