Understanding Srisailam & Andhra Shravan Yatra

Nestled atop the flat-topped **Srigiri Mountain** in the dense Nallamala Tiger Reserve Forest of Nandyal district, Andhra Pradesh, **Srisailam Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple** holds a supreme position in Sanatana Dharma. It is the only sanctuary in India that is simultaneously counted among the **12 Jyotirlingas** (Lord Shiva) and the **51 Maha Shakti Peethas** (Goddess Bhramaramba Devi).

During Shravan month, millions of devotees take a holy dip in **Patalaganga** (the Krishna River flowing through a deep gorge 852 steps below the temple) before climbing to perform Sparsha Darshan and Abhishekam over the Swayambhu Lingam decorated with fragrant Jasmine flowers (*Mallika*).

Srigiri Mountain & Jasmine Shiva Legend

Legend recounts that when Lord Kartikeya left Mount Kailash in anger after a divine race around the world, He took abode on **Krouncha Mountain**. Deeply concerned, Lord Shiva and Parvati visited Him. Shiva manifested as a Swayambhu Lingam on Srigiri peak, while Parvati took the form of **Bhramaramba** (Goddess of Bees) to slay the demon Arunasura.

Princess **Chandravati** observed a divine cow giving milk automatically over a natural stone in the Nallamala forest. She began worshipping the stone with wild Jasmine flowers (*Mallika*). Pleased with her devotion, Lord Shiva manifested as **Mallikarjuna** (Lord adorned with Jasmine), combining *Mallika* (Parvati) and *Arjuna* (Shiva).
