Understanding Bhimashankar & Grishneshwar

Maharashtra holds the extraordinary pride of housing 5 out of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India. Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga (6th) is situated amidst mist-shrouded monsoon rainforests in Khed taluka of Pune district at an altitude of 3,250 feet, while Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga (12th) stands near the famous UNESCO World Heritage **Ellora Caves** in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad).

Visiting these shrines during Shravan (August 13 to September 11, 2026) offers a breathtaking blend of lush Sahyadri waterfalls, ancient Nagara wooden architecture, holy snan at **Gupt Bhimashankar**, and visiting the monolithic rock-cut **Kailasa Temple (Cave 16)**.

Demon Bhima & Ghushma's Divine Devotion

According to Shiva Purana, demon **Bhima** (son of Kumbhakarna and Karkati) performed penance to Lord Brahma and gained immense power to oppress sages in the Sahyadri mountains. When he attempted to destroy a Shiva Lingam worshipped by King Sudakshina, Lord Shiva manifested in his fierce form and reduced Bhima to ashes. The sweat that poured from Shiva's body during the battle formed the **Bhima River**.

1. Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga

Self-manifested (*Swayambhu*) Jyotirlinga placed low in the sanctum pit, receiving constant stream of natural spring water.

2. Ghushmeshwar (Grishneshwar)

Devotee Ghushma immersed 101 earthen lingams daily in Shivalaya lake. Lord Shiva resurrected her murdered son and manifested here as Grishneshwar.

3. Red Basalt Architecture

Grishneshwar temple was restored in 1783 CE by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar using hand-carved reddish-pink basalt stone.
