Understanding Vaishno Devi & Shiv Khori

Nestled in the majestic Trikuta Mountains of Jammu & Kashmir, **Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine** (at 5,200 feet altitude in Katra) is one of the most revered Shakti Peethas in Bharat. Just 70 km away lies **Shiv Khori**, a miraculous 150-meter-long natural limestone cave in Reasi district, housing a 4-foot Swayambhu Shiva Lingam that receives natural milk-water drops from the cave roof.

Visiting both shrines during Shravan (July 29 to August 28, 2026) is considered exceptionally rewarding. Pilgrims undertake the 12-km trek from Katra to Bhavan, pass through the sacred **Garbhajoon cave** at Ardhkuwari, visit **Bhairon Ghati**, and then journey to Shiv Khori for the holy natural cave Darshan.

Mata Vaishnavi & Bhasmasura Cave Legend

According to legends, Mata Vaishnavi manifested from the combined energies of Goddess Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Kali to destroy evil forces. She meditated for 9 months in the **Garbhajoon Cave** at Ardhkuwari before assume her divine form to decapitate the tantrik Bhairon Nath. Out of divine mercy, she granted Bhairon Nath liberation and decreed that her pilgrimage is complete ONLY after visiting Bhairon Temple.

Simultaneously, the legend of **Shiv Khori** tells how demon Bhasmasura obtained a boon from Lord Shiva to reduce anyone to ashes by touching their head. When Bhasmasura tried to test the boon on Shiva Himself, Lord Shiva entered the secret 150-meter natural cave of Shiv Khori. Lord Vishnu assumed the Mohini form to trick Bhasmasura into dancing and placing his own hand on his head, saving the universe.
