Understanding Murudeshwar & Coastal Karnataka Shravan

Rising dramatically on Kanduka Hill peninsula jutting into the roaring Arabian Sea, **Murudeshwar Temple** is home to the **123-foot colossal Lord Shiva statue** (world's second tallest) and a towering **249-foot 18-story Rajagopuram** equipped with high-speed glass elevators to an observation deck.

Murudeshwar is an integral part of the **Pancha Kshetras** created by scattered pieces of Lord Shiva's divine **Atma Linga** (alongside **Gokarna Mahabaleshwar**, **Dhareshwar**, **Gunavanteshwar**, and **Sajjeshwar**). Combined with **Sahasralinga's 1,000 riverbed lingams** in Sirsi and **Dharmasthala Manjunatha**, Coastal Karnataka offers an unmatched Shravan pilgrimage.

Ravana's Atma Linga & Pancha Kshetras Lore

According to Ramayana lore, Ravana obtained the invincible **Atma Linga** from Lord Shiva on Kailash through extreme penance. Fearful that Ravana would become immortal, Lord Vishnu created a fake sunset with his Sudarshana Chakra, forcing Ravana to perform evening Sandhyavandanam. Lord Ganesha appeared disguised as a young cowherd boy (*Batu*) and agreed to hold the Linga.

Ganesha called Ravana thrice quickly and placed the Atma Linga firmly on the earth at **Gokarna**, fixing it permanently. Enraged, Ravana tried to uproot the stone, tearing off the cloth wrapping, box cover, and casing which fell at **Murudeshwar**, **Dhareshwar**, **Gunavanteshwar**, and **Sajjeshwar** — establishing the 5 sacred Pancha Kshetras of Uttara Kannada.

1. Gokarna (Prana Linga)

Original Atma Linga fixed by Ganesha; pilgrims touch the sacred stone inside Garbhagriha (*Sparsha Darshan*).

2. Murudeshwar (Cloth Cover)

Site where the cloth wrapping (*Kanduka*) of the Linga fell on Kanduka Hill surrounded by ocean.

3. Sahasralinga (1,000 Lingas)

1,000 stone Lingams carved on rocks in the Shalmala river bed near Sirsi commissioned by King Sadashivaraya.
