Understanding Tarapith & Bengal Shravan Yatra

West Bengal celebrates Shravan with intense spiritual fervour centered around two mega shrines: **Tarakeswar Taraknath Temple** in Hooghly district and **Tarapith Shakti Peetha** in Birbhum district. Every Shravan Monday, over 500,000 saffron-clad Kanwariyas collect holy Ganges water from Sheoraphuli Ghat on the Hooghly River and walk 38 km barefoot overnight carrying decorated bamboo *Kanwar* slings to offer Jalabhishek to Lord Taraknath.

Continuing northward into Birbhum district brings pilgrims to **Tarapith**, where Mata Sati's third eye fell, and where Saint **Bamakhepa** attained divine Siddhi in the Mahashamshan (cremation grounds). Combined with **Bakreshwar's 7 natural thermal sulfur springs**, this forms Bengal's premier Shravan pilgrimage.

Lord Taraknath & Saint Bamakhepa Legend

The origin of **Tarakeswar Temple** dates back to 1729 CE when Raja Bharamalla of Mallabhum dreamed of Lord Shiva manifesting as a Swayambhu Lingam in the jungle of Hooghly. A cow named Kapila offered her milk daily over the hidden stone. The king constructed an At-Chala style terracotta temple which became famous for fulfilling all sincere vows (*Manasat*).

At **Tarapith**, Goddess Tara (the ferocious second Mahavidya) is worshipped alongside Lord Shiva as **Chandrachur**. Saint **Bamakhepa** (1837–1911 CE), the "Mad Saint of Tarapith", lived in the Mahashamshan, ate with jackals, and saw Maa Tara in person. Lord Shiva and Maa Tara are worshipped together as the eternal union of cosmic energy.
