Understanding Baijnath & Himachal Shiva Circuit

Set against the snow-clad backdrop of the Dhauladhar mountain range in Kangra Valley, Baijnath Temple is a magnificent 13th-century stone temple dedicated to Lord Shiva as Vaidyanath (The Lord of Physicians). Surrounded by pine forests and mountain streams, Baijnath is the spiritual focal point of Shravan month in Himachal Pradesh.

Visiting Baijnath during Shravan (July 29 to August 28, 2026) opens the door to a complete mountain Shiva circuit, including the miraculous **Kathgarh Split Lingam** at Indora, **Trilokpur Cave Temple**, **Bijli Mahadev** in Kullu, and the high-altitude **Manimahesh Kailash Lake Yatra** in Chamba.

Ravana's Atma Linga Penance & No Dussehra Rule

According to Shiva Purana, Ravana (King of Lanka) performed intense penance at Baijnath to obtain the invincible **Atma Linga** from Lord Shiva. To prove his unyielding devotion, Ravana cut off his ten heads one by one and offered them into the sacrificial fire. Pleased with his sacrifice, Lord Shiva acted as a celestial physician (*Vaidya*), restored Ravana's heads, and granted him the Lingam on the condition that if placed on the ground, it would establish itself permanently.

When Lord Ganesha in the guise of a cowherd placed the Lingam on the ground at Baijnath, it rooted itself irrevocably. Out of immense respect for Ravana's pure devotion to Lord Shiva at this site, **the town of Baijnath never burns effigies of Ravana during Dussehra**, nor does it have goldsmith shops.

1. Swayambhu Vaidyanath

Self-manifested Lingam receiving continuous milk and water Abhishekam; believed to heal all physical and spiritual ailments.

2. No Dussehra Burning

Baijnath is the only town in North India where Ravana Effigies are never burnt to honor his supreme Shiva Bhakti.

3. 1204 CE Inscriptions

Sanskrit inscriptions on stone slabs confirm construction by merchant brothers Manyuka & Ahuka in 1204 CE.

Kathgarh Natural Split Lingam Playbook

The Shifting Planetary Split Lingam (Indora, Kangra)

🌌 Planetary Gap Shift

The distance between the Shiva and Parvati halves naturally increases and decreases based on planetary movements and moon phases (closest on Shivratri).

⚔️ Alexander's Octagonal Altar

Greek conqueror Alexander the Great worshipped at Kathgarh in 326 BCE and constructed an octagonal stone platform around the Lingam before turning back.
