Understanding Tiruvannamalai & Arunachala Shravan Yatra

Rising majestically at the base of the sacred **Arunachala Hill** in Tiruvannamalai district, Tamil Nadu, the **Arulmigu Annamalaiyar Temple** is one of the grandest temple complexes in India (covering 25 acres). It represents **Agni** (Fire) — the third element of the *Pancha Bhoota Stalam* (Five Elemental Temples of Lord Shiva).

In Tiruvannamalai, the red hill of Arunachala is itself worshipped as the physical embodiment (*Swayambhu Lingam*) of Lord Shiva. During Shravan month and Pournami (Full Moon), hundreds of thousands of barefoot pilgrims perform **Girivalam** — a 14 km devotional walk around the base of Arunachala Hill, meditating at the 8 cardinal **Ashta Lingams**.

The Legend of the Infinite Column of Cosmic Fire

Legend from the *Arunachala Mahatmya* recounts an argument between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu over who was supreme in the universe. To dissolve their ego, Lord Shiva manifested between them as an infinite, blazing pillar of cosmic fire (*Jyotir Lingam*) that pierced through the underworld and upper heavens.

Lord Vishnu transformed into a wild boar (*Varaha*) and dug deep into the earth for thousands of years but could not find the base. Lord Brahma flew upwards as a swan (*Hamsa*) to find the crown, but failed and falsely claimed victory using a falling Kewra flower (*Ketaki*) as witness. Realizing their mistake, both bowed in humility. Upon their prayer, Shiva cooled the burning fire column into the quiet red hill of **Arunachala**.
