Understanding Gokarna & Coastal Karnataka Shravan Yatra

Situated between the Gangavali and Aganashini rivers along the pristine Arabian Sea coastline in Uttara Kannada district, **Gokarna** ("Cow's Ear") is revered as one of the seven *Muktistala* (salvation sites) of Karnataka. It houses the sacred **Atmalinga** (Pranalinga) — the soul-lingam of Lord Shiva bestowed upon King Ravana of Lanka after intense penance on Mount Kailash.

During Shravan month (*Shravana Masam* in Karnataka's Amanta calendar), thousands of pilgrims purify themselves in the sacred **Kotiteertha tank** or the ocean at Gokarna Main Beach before queuing to perform Sparsha Darshan — physically touching the top of the Atmalinga concealed inside a square granite pit (*Saligrama Peetha*).

Gokarna & Ravana's Kailash Penance Lore

According to the *Gokarna Mahatmya* of the Skanda Purana, King Ravana performed severe penance on Mount Kailash to win invincible power. Pleased, Lord Shiva granted him His own **Atmalinga** under one strict condition: *The Atmalinga must never be placed on the ground anywhere during the journey; wherever it touches earth, it will remain fixed forever.*

Fearing Ravana's invincible power, Lord Vishnu used His Sudarshana Chakra to eclipse the sun at Gokarna, creating the illusion of evening. As a devout Brahmin, Ravana needed to perform evening prayers (*Sandhyavandanam*). Lord Ganesha appeared in the form of a young cowherd boy (*Batu Brahmin*) and offered to hold the Lingam. Ganesha called Ravana's name thrice, and when Ravana didn't return, He placed the Atmalinga firmly on the ground at Gokarna.

Realizing the divine play, Ravana tried to pull out the Lingam with all his might (*Mahabala*), but only pieces broke off and scattered across Coastal Karnataka, forming five sacred shrines: **Mahabaleshwar** (Gokarna), **Dhareshwar**, **Gunavanteshwar**, **Murudeshwar**, and **Sajjeshwar**.

1. Gokarna Atmalinga

The primary root Atmalinga of Lord Shiva fixed permanently by Lord Ganesha; only the tip is visible inside a square pit.

3. Kotiteertha Tank
