Understanding Omkareshwar & MP Shravan Yatra

Situated in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh where the holy **Narmada River** splits into two streams around Mandhata island before reuniting at Sangam, **Omkareshwar** is the venerated **4th Jyotirlinga** of Lord Shiva. The island naturally takes the shape of the sacred Vedic syllable **ॐ** (Om) when viewed from the air.

During Shravan month, millions of devotees perform the holy dip in the Narmada River (*Narmada Snan*) at Keveri Sangam Ghat, cross the Jhula Pul suspension bridge to Mandhata island, offer Narmada water over the Swayambhu Lingam, and undertake the sacred **7 km Mandhata Parikrama trek**.

Omkareshwar & Vindhyachal Penance Legend

According to the *Shiva Purana*, the deity controlling the **Vindhyachal mountain range** performed intense penance to Lord Shiva on the banks of the Narmada to become higher than Mount Meru. Pleased by Vindhya's devotion, Lord Shiva created a divine Lingam that divided into two parts: **Omkareshwar** (Lord of the Om Sound) on Mandhata island and **Amareshwar / Mamleshwar** (Lord of the Immortals) on the southern mainland bank.

In another ancient legend, King **Mandhata** of the Ikshvaku dynasty (ancestor of Lord Rama) performed severe austerities on this island. Lord Shiva appeared and manifested as the Swayambhu Jyotirlinga, granting the island the permanent title of *Mandhata Parvat*.
