Understanding Rishikesh Neelkanth & Garhwal Shravan Yatra

Perched at an elevation of 1,330 meters amidst the dense pine and sal forests of Manikoot Parvat in Pauri Garhwal district, Uttarakhand, **Neelkanth Mahadev Temple** is one of the most sacred Shiva shrines in the Garhwal Himalayas. It stands at the confluence of the sacred mountain streams Pankaja and Madhumati.

During Shravan month, millions of saffron-clad **Kanwariyas** collect holy Ganga Jal from Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar or Triveni Ghat in Rishikesh and undertake a grueling 12 km barefoot mountain climb through the Nar-Narayan forest range to perform Jalabhishek over the Swayambhu Shiva Lingam.

The Legend of Samudra Manthan & Halahala Poison

According to the *Srimad Bhagavatam* and *Skanda Purana*, during the celestial churning of the ocean (*Samudra Manthan*) by Devas and Asuras, a lethal, burning ocean of poison named **Halahala** (Kalakuta) emerged first, threatening to incinerate all three worlds.

Terrified, all Gods approached Lord Shiva at Mount Kailash. Out of boundless compassion, Shiva drank the deadly poison to save creation. Goddess Parvati placed Her hand gently on His throat to stop the poison from descending into His stomach. The intense heat held in His neck turned it blue, earning Him the divine title **Neelkanth** ("The Blue-Throated One"). Shiva then rested under a Peepal tree at Manikoot hill for thousands of years to cool His body.
