Understanding Haridwar Har Ki Pauri & Shravan Kanwar Yatra

Situated at the point where the sacred River Ganges emerges from the Garhwal Himalayan foothills into the plains of Northern India, **Haridwar** ("Gateway to Lord Hari / Shiva") is one of the seven holiest cities (*Sapta Puri*) of Sanatana Dharma.

During the holy month of Shravan, Haridwar transforms into the world's largest pedestrian pilgrimage gathering. Over 10 to 15 million saffron-clad **Kanwariyas** trek hundreds of kilometers barefoot from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, and Punjab to collect untouched Ganga Jal from **Har Ki Pauri Brahmakund** and offer it at Shiva shrines nationwide.

The Legend of Amrita Drops & Daksha Yajna

Puranic tradition states that during the celestial tussle over the urn of immortality (*Amrita Kumbha*) following Samudra Manthan, Lord Garuda carried the pitcher across the skies. Drops of holy Amrita fell at four sacred places on Earth: **Haridwar (Brahmakund)**, Ujjain, Prayagraj, and Nashik. Bathing at Brahmakund during Shravan bestows the merit of infinite horse sacrifices (*Aswamedha Yajna*).

Furthermore, in Kankhal (3 km south of Har Ki Pauri), King Daksha Prajapati organized the great Yajna where Lord Shiva was insulted, prompting Sati to jump into the Yajna fire. Shiva's wrathful form Veerabhadra destroyed the Yajna. After King Daksha was forgiven with a goat's head, Shiva promised to reside in Kankhal permanently during the month of Shravan.
