The Land of the Gods: 13 Himalayan Districts, Ancient Katyuri & Chand Kingdoms, Holy River Origins, and Glacial Sanctuaries
The Geographic & Spiritual Identity of Devbhumi
Carved from the northwestern Himalayan highlands of Uttar Pradesh on November 9, 2000, Uttarakhand—originally designated as Uttaranchal and officially renamed Uttarakhand in January 2007—is India's 27th state. Covering an area of 53,483 square kilometers, Uttarakhand is bordered by the Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the north, the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal across the Mahakali River to the east, Himachal Pradesh to the west, and Uttar Pradesh to the south. The state represents one of the planet's most dramatic vertical environmental transects, rising precipitously from the subtropical sal forests and agricultural grasslands of the Terai-Bhabar plains at 300 meters above sea level to the glaciated apex of Mount Nanda Devi at 7,816 meters (25,643 feet), the second-highest mountain in India.
Uttarakhand's sacred identity has earned it the universal title of Devbhumi—the Abode of the Gods. Here, within glaciated amphitheaters high above the timberline, originate the two most sacred lifelines of the Indian subcontinent: the holy River Ganges (rising as the Bhagirathi from the Gaumukh snout of the Gangotri Glacier) and the River Yamuna (rising from the crags of Yamunotri below Swargarohini). Ancient Vedic texts, including the Skanda Purana, structure this mystical landscape into two venerable sacred realms: Kedar Khanda, encompassing the rugged canyons and Shiva sanctuaries of the western Garhwal division, and Manas Khanda, encompassing the deodar-forested ridges, sacred stepwells, and Devi temples of the eastern Kumaon division.
Garhwal & Kumaon: Two Distinct Himalayan Realms
Uttarakhand is divided culturally, geographically, and administratively into two historic divisions: Garhwal in the west (comprising 7 districts) and Kumaon in the east (comprising 6 districts). While both share common Pahadi roots and profound reverence for the high Himalayan peaks, each possesses its own distinct dialect, architectural heritage, folk rituals, and culinary traditions.
Garhwal Division (Kedar Khanda)
Encompassing Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and Uttarkashi. Historically unified under the Parmar (Panwar) dynasty who consolidated the 52 ancient hill fortresses (garhs) from their royal capitals at Chandpur Garhi, Srinagar, and Tehri. Garhwal is defined by deep, precipitous river canyons along the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi, the sacred Char Dham pilgrimage circuits, the historic Regimental Centre of the Garhwal Rifles at Lansdowne, and the vibrant Garhwali language.
Kumaon Division (Manas Khanda)
Encompassing Almora, Nainital, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Champawat, and Udham Singh Nagar. Historically governed by the great Katyuri kings and subsequently unified under the Chand dynasty from their capitals at Champawat and Almora. Kumaon is characterized by rolling oak-and-pine ridges offering 300-km continuous Himalayan snow panoramas, the ancient nagara stone temples of Jageshwar and Baijnath, intricate Aipan ritual floor art, the martial Chholiya dance, and the sweet confection of Bal Mithai.

The Sacred Char Dham & The Panch Prayag
For centuries, devout pilgrims have journeyed to the high Garhwal Himalayas to complete the sacred Char Dham Yatra, traditionally undertaken in clockwise order:
- Yamunotri Dham (3,293 m): First stop in the circuit, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. Reached via a 6-km trek from Janki Chatti along the rushing Yamuna gorge, famous for natural boiling hot sulfur springs at Surya Kund where pilgrims cook rice.
- Gangotri Dham (3,100 m): The holy seat of Goddess Ganga on the banks of the Bhagirathi River in Uttarkashi district. Features an 18th-century white granite temple built by Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa. Trekking corridor leads to Gaumukh glacier (18 km).
- Kedarnath Dham (3,584 m): One of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and the foremost of the Panch Kedar. Situated in the glacial valley of the Mandakini River beneath the towering Kedarnath peak, reached via a 16-km trek from Gaurikund.
- Badrinath Dham (3,133 m): Crown jewel of the circuit, dedicated to Lord Vishnu as Badri Narayan in meditative Padmasana posture. Located along the Alaknanda River between the Nar and Narayana mountain ranges in Chamoli district.
The Sacred Panch Prayag (Five Holy Confluences)
Along the sacred descent of the Alaknanda River from Badrinath down to the plains, five legendary river confluences (Prayags) form a cascading pilgrimage chain:
