Chopta — Mini Switzerland of the East

Chopta is an unspoiled scenic destination nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. Located at an altitude of 2,680 meters (8,790 feet) within the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, it is enveloped by dense forests of oak, pine, and crimson rhododendrons.

As the starting point for treks to the sacred Tungnath Temple and the soaring Chandrashila Peak, Chopta is a haven for trekkers, pilgrims, and birdwatchers seeking alpine solace.

Kafuli is a thick, highly nutritious green gravy made with fresh spinach and mustard leaves. The greens are boiled, mashed, and cooked in a heavy iron kadhai with ginger, green chilies, and local spices. It is thickened using rice paste and served hot with steamed rice.

  • Dehradun (DED) to Chopta: Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airport, located around 220 km away.
  • Hire a private cab or board local state transport buses heading to Rudraprayag or Ukhimath.

  • Rishikesh / Haridwar Railway Station: Located around 200 km away. Connected to major cities.
  • Buses and shared jeeps operate regularly up the valley along the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers.

By Road

  • Rishikesh to Chopta Route: Rishikesh — Devprayag — Srinagar — Rudraprayag — Kund — Ukhimath — Chopta.
  • Excellent winding mountain roads. Drive slow and avoid travel during heavy monsoon landslides.

Chopta mein electricity aur mobile network kaisa hai? +
Electricity is very limited on the main Chopta strip; most guest houses rely on solar power. BSNL, Airtel, and Jio have decent network connectivity for calling in Chopta, but internet speed is sluggish and intermittent.
Kya Tungnath Temple thand mein khula rehta hai? +
No. The temple closes from November to April due to heavy snow. The deity is moved to Makkumath. However, trekkers can still trek to the temple exterior and Chandrashila Peak during winter if snow levels are manageable.
Kya Chopta mein petrol pump hai? +
No. There are no commercial petrol pumps in Chopta. The nearest functional petrol stations are located in Ukhimath (approx. 30 km away) or Kund. Make sure to top up your fuel tank before driving up.
