Glacier Blue & Pine Bark Brown
Uttarkashi is the northern frontier district of Uttarakhand, a place of immense geographic grandeur and profound spiritual significance.
Bounded by Tibet to the north, the district hosts the glacial sources of India's two most sacred rivers. The Bhagirathi (the primary source of the Ganga) rises from the icy snout of Gaumukh in the Gangotri Glacier, while the Yamuna originates at the Yamunotri Glacier on the slopes of Bandarpunch peak. These ancient rivers carve their paths through deep gorges, bordered by deodar, pine, and birch trees.
Beyond its holy temples, Uttarkashi is a prime destination for high-altitude trekking and mountaineering. The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) is situated here on the hills of Ladari, training climbers from across the globe. The district is home to vast alpine grasslands (Dayara Bugyal) and scenic valleys like Harsil, which features apple orchards first planted by British settlers in the 19th century.
