Umling La Pass
World's Highest Motorable Pass at 19,300 Feet: The Trans-Himalayan Frontier Ridge of Project Himank. Connects Chisumle to Demchok & Hanle Valley.
From the arid, wind-scoured permafrost crests of the Trans-Himalayas in Ladakh to the rain-drenched rainforest switchbacks of the Western Ghats, mountain passes have shaped the military history, cultural diffusion, and commercial trade corridors of the Indian subcontinent for thousands of years. Mountain passes—known variously as La in Tibetan and Ladakhi, Ghati or Dhar in the Western Himalayas, Khal in Garhwal, and Ghat or Churam in peninsular India—represent the narrow natural breaches in formidable continental walls through which rivers, pilgrims, trade caravans, and modern paved highways negotiate the terrain.
This master atlas brings together 69 of India's most significant mountain passes across six distinct alpine regions. Each individual guide is constructed upon verified geographic coordinates, audited summit elevations in metres and feet, engineering details of the responsible road agencies (chiefly the Border Roads Organisation under Projects Himank, Beacon, Deepak, Sampark, and Swastik), road surface profiles, hairpin bend counts, acclimatization advisories, permit regulations, and seasonal clearance cycles.
Perched above 4,000 to nearly 6,000 metres in the rain-shadow of the Greater Himalayas, Ladakh is home to the highest motorable roads on planet Earth. Maintained by Project Himank ('The Mountain Tamers') and Project Vijayak, these cold-desert passes traverse permafrost and connect the Indus Valley with the frontier outposts of Nubra, Changthang, and Zanskar.

The construction and maintenance of India's high-altitude mountain passes is predominantly spearheaded by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), established in 1960 under the leadership of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to develop all-weather strategic connectivity across northern and northeastern frontiers. Operating through dedicated Border Roads Task Forces (BRTF) under regional project commands, the personnel of the BRO—colloquially celebrated as the 'GREF' (General Reserve Engineer Force)—work under extraordinary physiological and physical hardship.
Major BRO operational projects featured in this atlas include: Project Himank (Leh, Ladakh), renowned as 'The Mountain Tamers' and builders of Umling La and Khardung La; Project Beacon (Kashmir), guardians of the treacherous Zoji La and Razdan corridors; Project Deepak (Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand), overseers of Rohtang, Kunzum, and Mana passes; Project Sampark (Jammu), maintaining Peer Ki Gali and the Pir Panjal foothills; and Project Swastik (Sikkim), maintaining the historic Silk Road artery to Nathu La.
Umling La Pass in eastern Ladakh is the highest motorable road in the world at an audited elevation of 5,883 metres (19,300 feet) above sea level, constructed by Project Himank of the Border Roads Organisation.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), operating under the Ministry of Defence through specialized task forces including Project Himank, Project Beacon, Project Deepak, Project Sampark, and Project Swastik, builds and clears high-altitude strategic passes.
Passes located in frontier areas—such as Umling La, Khardung La, Chang La, and Marsimik La in Ladakh, and Nathu La and Bum La in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh—require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) or Protected Area Permit (PAP). Passes in Himachal Pradesh and the Western Ghats generally do not require permits for regular transit.
The prime driving window for high Himalayan passes is from late June to mid-September, when BRO snow-clearing operations are complete and daytime temperatures remain above freezing. Western Ghats passes are best visited during the monsoon (June to October) when waterfalls and rainforests are at their peak.
Prevention involves spending at least 48 hours acclimatizing at intermediate altitudes (such as Leh, Manali, or Joshimath), ascending gradually, staying thoroughly hydrated, avoiding alcohol and intense exertion, limiting summit exposure to 15 to 30 minutes, and carrying supplemental oxygen.
