Telangana Historical Chronicle
From Kotilingala & Kakatiya Monolithic Toranas to Qutb Shahi Golconda & 2014 Statehood
Satavahanas, Vishnukundinas & Ancient Deccan Roots (200 BCE – 1000 CE)
The dawn of recorded history in Telangana is anchored at Kotilingala in Jagtial district along the Godavari river, where coins of the early Satavahana rulers (Simuka and Satakarni) were unearthed. The Satavahanas developed maritime trade routes connecting the Deccan to Rome and Alexandria, patronizing Prakrit literature and Theravada Buddhist monasteries at Dhulikatta, Phanigiri, and Kondapur. Following the Satavahanas, the Vishnukundina dynasty constructed early rock-cut cave shrines, laying the foundations for classical Telugu language and culture.
The Imperial Kakatiya Golden Age & Architectural Genius (1163–1323 CE)
Under Prola II, Rudradeva, Ganapati Deva, Rani Rudrama Devi, and Prataparudra II, the Kakatiya Dynasty transformed Telangana into an engineering marvel. They pioneered revolutionary **sandbox foundations** and porous floating-brick technology to construct the **Ramappa (Rudreshwara) Temple** (1213 CE) in Mulugu—designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021. They built the Thousand Pillar Temple at Hanumakonda, the concentric stone walls and monolithic gateways (*Keerthi Toranas*) of Warangal Fort, and an extensive network of thousands of interconnected irrigation tanks (*Cheruvu*) like Pakhal and Laknavaram lakes that sustain Deccan agriculture to this day.
Qutb Shahi Dynasty, Nizams of Hyderabad & Diamond Age (1518–1948 CE)
Following the decline of the Kakatiyas and the interim rule of the Musunuri Nayakas and Bahmani Kingdom, Sultan Sultan Quli Qutb Shah established the Qutb Shahi Dynasty at Golconda in 1518. Golconda Fort became the world's premier diamond trading capital, producing legendary gems like the Koh-i-Noor, Hope, and Daria-i-Noor diamonds. In 1591 CE, Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah founded the city of Hyderabad and constructed the magnificent **Charminar**. In 1724 CE, Mir Qamar-ud-din Khan established the Asaf Jahi Dynasty (Nizams of Hyderabad), ruling the princely state of Hyderabad as one of British India's wealthiest sovereign realms, constructing Chowmahalla Palace, Falaknuma Palace, and the Osmania University.
Telangana Rebellion, Integration & Creation of India's 29th State (1948–2014)
In the 1940s, the peasant-led Telangana Rebellion fought against feudal land exploitation. Following Operation Polo in September 1948, Hyderabad State was integrated into the Indian Union. In 1956, despite local resistance, Telangana was merged with Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh. After decades of democratic movement—highlighted by the 1969 Jai Telangana movement and the modern struggle led by K. Chandrashekar Rao and civil societies—the Parliament of India passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, officially creating **Telangana as India's 29th state on June 2, 2014**.
