Bokaro is a highly planned industrial district located in the eastern part of Jharkhand. It was established in 1991, centered around the Bokaro Steel Plant, which was set up in collaboration with the Soviet Union.

Bokaro district lies in the undulating Chota Nagpur Plateau, flanked by the Damodar River basin to the north and east. The district covers an area of 2,883 km² with an average elevation of 210 meters above sea level.
The primary rivers draining the region are the Damodar, Garga, Konar, and Bokaro rivers. The southern border is dominated by the majestic Lugu Hills (Lalpania), covered in tropical dry deciduous forests of Sal, Mahua, Palas, and Teak.
