The Crown of Khmer Architecture
Spanning an astounding 162.6 hectares surrounded by a 190-meter-wide moat, Angkor Wat is the architectural masterpiece of the Khmer Empire. Unlike most Khmer temples oriented toward the rising sun in the east, Angkor Wat uniquely faces west, traditionally associated with the Hindu deity Lord Vishnu and symbolizing the cosmic path of the sun. Built over nearly three decades using over 5 million tonnes of sandstone, it represents the terrestrial replica of Mount Meru, the cosmic mountain home of Hindu gods.
The Sunrise Experience
Witnessing the sunrise behind the five lotus-bud towers of Angkor Wat is one of the world's great travel rites of passage. Enter the outer western gate by 5:15 AM with your pre-purchased Angkor Pass. Secure a vantage point beside the northern (left) reflecting pond to capture the silhouette of the central towers mirrored in the lily-covered waters as the sky shifts from indigo to crimson and gold.
The Gallery of Bas-Reliefs: Hindu Epics in Stone
The outer gallery walls contain over 1,200 square meters of exquisitely carved stone bas-reliefs depicting scenes from Hindu literature:
- The Churning of the Ocean of Milk (Samudra Manthan): On the eastern gallery, 88 Asuras (demons) and 92 Devas (gods) pull the multi-headed serpent Vasuki around Mount Mandara, while Lord Vishnu in his Kurma (turtle) avatar anchors the churning pivot amidst frolicking celestial Apsaras.
- The Battle of Kurukshetra: The western gallery vividly depicts the climactic clash from the Mahabharata, with Bhishma lying upon his bed of arrows and Arjuna riding his chariot driven by Krishna.
- The Battle of Lanka: Portraying Rama defeating Ravana with the aid of Sugriva and the Vanara army from the Ramayana.
Dress Code & Sacred Etiquette
As an active religious sanctuary, a strict dress code is enforced at the Bakan (central upper sanctuary). Shoulders and knees must be covered (scarves draped over shoulders are not accepted—you must wear a t-shirt or shirt with sleeves). Footwear can be worn except inside specific sanctums.
