What to Eat in West Bengal

Bengal has one of India's most sophisticated food cultures. Rice, fish, and sweets are the holy trinity — but the depth of preparation separates Bengali cuisine from anything comparable.

🐟

Ilish Bhapa

All Bengal · Monsoon Special

Hilsa steamed in mustard paste and green chilli in a banana leaf. The defining dish of Bengali cuisine. Never order it if it isn't confirmed fresh. Best from July–October.

🍲

Kosha Mangsho

Kolkata & All Bengal

Slow-cooked mutton with dark, intensely flavoured dry gravy — marinated overnight, fried in mustard oil until the fat renders out. The unofficial Sunday meal of every Bengali household. Best at Golbari (Kolkata) or any North Kolkata restaurant.

🍮

Mishti Doi

Nadia & All Bengal · Year-Round

Sweetened yoghurt fermented in unglazed earthen pots — the porous clay draws excess moisture, creating a silky, subtly sweet texture. Krishnanagar (Nadia) is considered the finest producer. Never refrigerate it if you can help it.

🧁

Rasgulla & Mishti

Nadia, Kolkata · Year-Round

Rasgulla (soft chhena balls in light syrup), Sandesh (dry chhena with sugar), Langcha (Shaktigarh), Ledikeni (named for Lady Canning), Raskadam — Bengal's sweet tradition is an art form with a 200-year artisan heritage.

🍛

Kolkata Biryani

Kolkata · Year-Round

Lighter and more fragrant than Lucknow biryani — with a boiled egg and potato alongside the meat, a legacy of the Nawabs of Awadh. Kewra and rose water make it distinct. Best at Arsalan, Aminia, or Royal on Stuart Lane (original).

🌿

Shukto

All Bengal · Traditional Lunch

The bitter-sweet vegetable medley served first in a Bengali meal — begun, karela, drumstick, raw banana cooked with mustard paste. The philosophy: begin with difficulty; sweet comes after. Not easy to find in restaurants — ask your guesthouse host to cook it.

🥙

Kathi Roll

Kolkata · Street Food

Invented at Nizam's (1930s) for British workers — egg-coated paratha wrapped around grilled kebab meat with onion and green chutney. Best eaten standing at the Dacres Lane stalls or the original Nizam's on New Market Street. No formal seating required.

🍵

Darjeeling First Flush Tea

Darjeeling · March–April

The world's most celebrated tea — first-flush (March–April) has a muscatel muscatine flavour unlike anything from Sri Lanka, Assam, or China. Buy directly from Happy Valley, Makaibari, or Castleton estates; reject anything in a tourist shop box with "Darjeeling" printed in Arial font.

Accommodation by District

West Bengal offers exceptional variety — from Kolkata's grand colonial hotels to Darjeeling's colonial-era guesthouses, Sundarbans jungle lodges, and Birbhum's village homestays.

Kolkata

The Grand Hotels & Budget Guesthouses

Luxury: Oberoi Grand (Park Street), Taj Bengal (Alipore), ITC Royal Bengal — historic grandeur.
Mid-range: Peerless Inn, Kenilworth, The Tollygunge Club (colonial setting with golf course).
Budget: Sudder Street guesthouses — Astoria, Timestar, Marquee; long traveller favourite since the 1970s.

Budget ₹600–1,800 · Mid ₹2,500–6,000 · Luxury ₹8,000–25,000

Darjeeling

Colonial Guesthouses & Tea Estate Bungalows

Heritage: The Elgin Darjeeling (1887 colonial property), Windamere Hotel (literary history — Hemingway-era charm).
Mid-range: Cedar Inn, Dekeling, Revolver (near Chowrasta).
Tea Estate: Makaibari Tea Bungalow, Glenburn Tea Estate — stay on the plantation itself (₹8,000–20,000/night all-inclusive).

Budget ₹700–1,800 · Mid ₹2,000–5,000 · Heritage ₹6,000–18,000

Murshidabad

Berhampore & Heritage Options

Most accommodation is in Berhampore (Murshidabad's largest city, 12km from Hazarduari). WB Tourism's Murshidabad Tourist Lodge is the most popular budget option; NH-12-adjacent hotels are functional. Azimganj has one heritage haveli stay option.

Budget ₹500–1,200 · Mid ₹1,500–3,500

Birbhum

Shantiniketan & Village Homestays

Shantiniketan: Visva-Bharati Guest House (book via university), several private guesthouses on Patha Bhavana Road. Tarapith: basic guesthouses within walking distance of the temple (book ahead during festivals). Village homestays: ask at Birbhum District Tourism, Suri — increasingly available.

Budget ₹400–900 · Mid ₹1,200–3,000

Sundarbans

Eco Lodges & Forest Houseboats

Budget: Basic concrete guesthouses in Gosaba (₹400–800/night). Eco lodges: Sundarbans Jungle Camp (Dayapur), Sajnekhali Tourist Lodge (WB Tourism).
Luxury houseboat: Sunderban Tiger Camp, Tiger Adventure — all-inclusive forest packages (₹8,000–15,000/night). Book weeks ahead in season.

Budget ₹400–900 · Eco ₹2,500–5,000 · Luxury ₹8,000–15,000

Bankura / Bishnupur

WB Tourism Lodge & Local Options

The WB Tourism Bishnupur Tourist Lodge is the best option — inside the temple town, clean, government-run (₹800–1,500). Book via WB Tourism website. A few private guesthouses have opened in recent years. Staying overnight allows the all-important sunrise temple visit.

Budget ₹600–1,500 · Mid ₹1,800–3,500

Permits & Special Entry

West Bengal is largely permit-free for Indian nationals. Foreign tourists need extra documentation for some areas.

🌊

Sundarbans Forest Permit

A forest entry permit is required to enter the core Sundarbans Tiger Reserve. These are obtained at Sajnekhali entry gate (arrive by noon). The permit includes a wildlife guard escort — mandatory for tiger zone entry. Costs approximately ₹150–300 for Indian nationals. Arrange through your boat operator or at the forest office directly.

Ganga Sagar Island

No special permit — take the ferry from Lot 8 jetty (South 24 Parganas). During Makar Sankranti (January 14), the island hosts over 2 million pilgrims and accommodation books out months in advance. If visiting during the mela, book by October at the latest.

🏔️

Singalila National Park (Sandakphu Trek)

Trekking to Sandakphu (3,636m, highest point of WB) requires a Singalila National Park entry permit obtainable at Maneybhanjang trailhead (₹100 for Indians, ₹200 for foreigners). No special permit for the standard Darjeeling–Ghoom tourist circuit.

🌍

Foreign Nationals — Area Restrictions

Most of West Bengal is open to foreign tourists on a standard India tourist visa. However, areas within 50km of the Bangladesh border (parts of Murshidabad, Malda, North 24 Parganas) require a Restricted Area Permit from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) or local Superintendent of Police office in advance.

Safety Tips for West Bengal

☀️

Summer Heat (May–June)

Kolkata and the Bengal plains reach 40–42°C before the monsoon. Carry ORS sachets, drink 3L+ water daily, avoid outdoor exertion between 11am–4pm. The heat stroke risk is real; know the symptoms. Hill stations (Darjeeling, Kalimpong) are comfortable year-round.

🦟

Monsoon Health (June–September)

Mosquito-borne diseases (dengue, malaria) increase significantly in monsoon. Use DEET repellent, sleep under a mosquito net in budget accommodation, and consider a malaria prophylactic if visiting forested areas (Sundarbans, Dooars). Avoid unbottled water anywhere. Stomach issues are common — carry Norflox/ORS.

🐯

Sundarbans Tiger Safety

Never leave the boat without a forest guard. Sundarbans tigers are habituated to approaching boats silently and have killed fishermen. Stay within the designated areas. Never shine a torch toward the forest at night. The tigers are not tame — they are the last truly wild tigers in a populated landscape. Respect that.

🌀

Cyclone Season (Bay of Bengal)

Coastal WB (Digha, Sundarbans) is in the Bay of Bengal cyclone belt. Major cyclones (Amphan, Yaas, Aila) have hit in May–June. Check IMD alerts before visiting the coast in pre-monsoon months. The Sundarbans can be completely cut off for days after a cyclone.

🏔️

Altitude in Darjeeling

Darjeeling (2,042m) and Sandakphu (3,636m) can cause mild altitude sickness in some visitors. Ascend gradually, avoid alcohol the first day, drink plenty of water. Sandakphu trekkers should carry Diamox if prone to altitude sickness. Kalimpong (1,250m) has no altitude concerns.

🛑

Political Hartals (Strikes)

Bengal has a tradition of political bandhs (general strikes) that can shut transport, shops, and services for a day with little warning. Check local news (The Telegraph Kolkata, Anandabazar Patrika) before travel. Darjeeling occasionally has Gorkhaland agitation-related bandhs that can disrupt hill transport for days.

What to Pack

What you need depends heavily on the season and which districts you're visiting. A Darjeeling packing list looks nothing like a Kolkata one.

👘

Modest clothing for temples (knees and shoulders covered) — applicable everywhere

🧥

Fleece jacket for Darjeeling (cold Oct–Mar, surprisingly cold even June nights)

Lightweight raincoat (essential Jun–Sep; Darjeeling is wet May–Sep)

🥾

Sturdy walking shoes (essential Sundarbans, Darjeeling, Purulia)

💊

ORS sachets, Norflox, Imodium, antihistamine, DEET repellent

🕶️

Sunglasses + sunscreen SPF 50+ for Digha beach and Sundarbans boat

🌡️

Small thermometer if visiting in summer — useful for monitoring heat stroke risk

🔦

Headtorch — essential for Sundarbans nights and Tarapith visits at odd hours

📱

Download offline maps (Maps.me or Google Maps offline) — rural WB has patchy data

💰

Carry cash — many temples, boats, and rural guesthouses are cash-only

📖

A Rabindranath Tagore poetry book — reading it in Shantiniketan is a transcendent experience

🎒

Day pack with rain cover for Darjeeling trek / Sundarbans day safari
