Five Major Airports

Chaudhary Charan Singh International (LKO) — Lucknow: the state's biggest hub. Flights from all major Indian cities and select Gulf routes.

Lal Bahadur Shastri International (VNS) — Varanasi: direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore — increasing international connections to Bangkok and Singapore.

Agra Airport (AGR): limited scheduled service; Indigo/SpiceJet from Delhi. Most visitors travel to Agra by train from Delhi (2h Shatabdi).

India's Busiest Rail State

UP sits at the crossroads of every major Indian rail corridor. The Delhi–Howrah main line passes through Agra, Kanpur, and Allahabad. The Delhi–Mumbai line branches south from Agra. The Delhi–Varanasi high-speed Vande Bharat Express (8h) is the fastest surface route to the Ganga.

Shatabdi Express (Delhi–Agra): India's most famous 2-hour run — leaves Delhi at 6am, arrives Agra Cantt at 8am. First-class AC with breakfast included.

Mahanagari Express / Poorva Express: overnight connections from Kolkata to Varanasi (~14h).

Gomti Express: Delhi–Lucknow in 6h. Tejas Express: Delhi–Lucknow in 6h, fully private AC.

By Road

Highways & UPSRTC Buses

The Yamuna Expressway (165km, 2h from Delhi to Agra) is one of India's best-maintained toll highways — smooth, fast, lined with rest stops. The Agra–Lucknow Expressway (302km, 3.5h) connects the Golden Triangle to the capital via a 100km/h, 6-lane highway.

UPSRTC (Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation) operates an extensive network of AC Volvo buses between all major cities. Ola/Uber-style intercity cabs (via Zingbus, AbhiBus) are comfortable and affordable.

Self-drive: Hire a car from Delhi for the Golden Triangle (Agra–Mathura–Vrindavan). One-way drop available from most providers.

Delhi → Agra (Yamuna Exp.)2h · Toll ₹540
Agra → Lucknow (Expressway)3.5h · Toll ₹620
Lucknow → Varanasi6h · NH-56
Varanasi → Prayagraj2.5h · NH-19
🛺 Getting Around Within UP: Auto-rickshaws in Varanasi navigate the narrow galis; negotiate a fixed rate before boarding (₹50–150 intra-city). In Agra, government-approved electric rickshaws (e-rickshaws) must be used for the Taj Mahal south gate approach — no petrol vehicles allowed within 500m. In Lucknow, Ola/Uber works reliably. For the Mathura–Vrindavan circuit, hire a private three-wheeler for the day (₹400–600). Overnight private buses (UPSRTC Volvo) are the cheapest intercity option at ₹400–900.

Best Time to Visit Uttar Pradesh

October to March is the unquestioned window — cool air, clear marble, and the full festival calendar. But each season of UP has its specific magic that only reveals itself to those who seek it.

MonthWeatherRatingKey EventsTraveller Tip
January Cold, 6–18°C. Fog in north UP. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Makar Sankranti (Jan 14) · Kite Festival · Bateshwar Cattle FairPeak Season Dense Gangetic fog cancels trains — confirm before boarding. Taj Mahal in winter fog is ethereal. Carry heavy layers for Varanasi ghat dawns (4°C feels).
February Mild, 10–24°C. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Maha Shivaratri at Varanasi · Taj Mahotsav (Agra, Feb 18–27)Best Month Taj Mahotsav is a 10-day cultural festival adjacent to the Taj — folk artists, crafts, food from all over India. The best week to visit Agra. Also prime Varanasi weather.
March Warm, 14–30°C. Increasingly pleasant. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🎨 HOLI at Mathura & Vrindavan — the most spectacular in IndiaBest Month Mathura/Vrindavan Holi (week before the main date) is unlike anything else in India. Book accommodation 3 months ahead. Carry old white clothes and protect your camera.
April Hot, 24–38°C. ⭐⭐⭐ Ram Navami at Ayodhya · Buddhist New Year at Sarnath Good for Ayodhya Ram Navami (important pilgrimage, manageable crowds). Hot but bearable mornings. Avoid midday outdoor sightseeing.
May Very hot, 32–46°C. ⭐⭐ Buddha Purnima at Sarnath & KushinagarAvoid (Plains) Buddhist circuit (Sarnath, Kushinagar) is the one reason to visit in May — pilgrims keep crowd sizes workable. Otherwise, Uttar Pradesh in May is unforgiving.
June Pre-monsoon hot, 34–44°C. Occasional early rain. Kanwar Mela preparations beginAvoid The worst month to visit Uttar Pradesh. Dust storms (andhi) hit the plains. Even the marble of the Taj Mahal radiates heat. Spend this month elsewhere.
July Monsoon, 28–36°C. Heavy rain. ⭐⭐ 🚶 Kanwar Yatra (Haridwar → Varanasi) — millions carry Ganga water Ganga in flood at Varanasi is spectacular — ghats partially submerged. The Kanwar Yatra procession along NH-58 is one of India's great spectacles. Roads to rural sites impassable.
August Monsoon, 27–34°C. High humidity. ⭐⭐ Krishna Janmashtami at Mathura & Vrindavan · Independence Day Janmashtami in Mathura is extraordinary — the entire town transforms. But humidity is brutal. Stay in AC accommodation.
September Rain easing, 26–34°C. Humid. ⭐⭐⭐ Navratri begins · Teej festival Second half of September sees the rains ease. Dudhwa National Park roads begin clearing. Good for adventurous travellers who want fewer tourists.
October Post-monsoon, 18–30°C. Clear skies. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Navratri · Dussehra at Varanasi (Ramnagar Ramleela — world's longest) · Chhath PujaBest Month The Ramnagar Ramleela (across river from Varanasi) has run for 200+ years — Tulsidas's entire Ramcharitmanas enacted over 31 consecutive days. An once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience.
November Cool, 12–26°C. Perfect. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Diwali at Ayodhya (3.5 lakh diyas on ghats) · Dev Deepawali VaranasiBest Month Dev Deepawali in Varanasi (15 days after Diwali) — one million diyas lit on all 84 ghats simultaneously. Book accommodation 4–6 months ahead. The most beautiful night in India.
December Cold, 7–20°C. Fog builds late December. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Christmas at Lucknow's colonial churches · New Year in Varanasi Perfect for Agra (Taj Mahal in winter light) and Lucknow (Lucknow Mahotsav festival in Dec). Fog disrupts flights — always have train backup. Dudhwa wildlife excellent mid-Dec onwards.

Uttar Pradesh Itineraries

Stop at a chai stall and watch the city wake up. 11am: Kashi Vishwanath Temple complex (rebuilt 2021 corridor) — early morning crowd has thinned. Afternoon: Sarnath by hired auto (10km) — see the Dhamek Stupa where Buddha gave his first sermon, and the Sarnath Museum (Ashoka Lion Capital, India's national emblem). 7pm: Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh — 7 priests with brass lamps in choreographed ritual.
  • Stay in a guesthouse on the ghats — Assi, Tulsi, or Harishchandra Ghat area

What to Eat in Uttar Pradesh

From the kebab kitchens of Nawabi Lucknow to the dawn jalebis of Varanasi and the mythological sweets of Mathura — Uttar Pradesh feeds the soul as much as the body.

🥩

Galouti Kebab

Lucknow · Tunday Kebabi, Chowk

The kebab invented for a toothless Nawab — 160 spices ground into minced meat (traditionally buffalo) so fine it dissolves on the tongue. Served on a fried sheermal bread. 120 years of recipe secrecy. Do not leave Lucknow without eating this.

🍛

Lucknowi Dum Biryani

Lucknow · Idris ki Biryani, Wahid

The Awadhi dum technique — rice and meat cooked sealed in a handi vessel over low coal, creating steam that perfumes every grain. Lighter, more fragrant than Hyderabadi biryani; the rice is infused with rose water and saffron. Try Idris ki Biryani in Chowk — same recipe since 1929.

🥐

Bedai & Kachori-Jalebi

Varanasi · All ghat-side stalls, 5–10am only

The quintessential Banarasi breakfast — deep-fried whole wheat kachoris (stuffed with spiced urad dal) with potato sabzi, eaten with fresh hot jalebis (spiral wheat-flour swirls in sugar syrup). Available only in the early morning. Ram Bhandar near Godowlia chowk is the canonical address.

🌿

Malaiyo

Varanasi · Chowk market · November–February only

A winter-only dessert made from whipped milk foam collected at dawn and infused with saffron and cardamom — it literally melts before you finish the thought of eating it. Available only October–February when temperatures drop enough for the foam to set. One of India's most seasonal, ephemeral foods.

🍬

Petha

Agra · Panchi Petha (the original since 1880s)

Translucent white candy made from ash gourd (white pumpkin) — Agra's one great food contribution to the world. Panchi Petha, established in Noori gate, offers 50+ varieties: angoori (grape-shaped), kesariya (saffron), paan-flavoured, chocolate-coated. The plain original remains the finest.

🥛

Mathura Pedha

Mathura & Vrindavan · All sweet shops

Dense milk-solid sweets (mawa) flavoured with cardamom, offered as prasad in all Krishna temples and sold by every shop in Mathura. Each shop has a slightly different texture — some crumbly, some dense and chewy. The Gopinath Pedha Bhandar near Holi Gate is the oldest and best.

🫙

Agra Ki Dalmoth

Agra · All markets

Spiced fried lentil snack mix — Agra's answer to Bombay Mix, but older and more refined. Crispy masoor and moong dal tossed with cashews, raisins, and spices. The ideal train snack and the most authentic Agra souvenir.

🌱

Tamatar Ki Chaat

Varanasi · Kashi Chaat Bhandar, Godowlia

A Varanasi-exclusive street dish — cooked tomatoes mashed with potatoes, tossed with chutneys, spices, and topped with crispy sev. Sounds simple; tastes unlike anything else. The Kashi Chaat Bhandar at Godowlia has served this since 1935. Evening only, when the queue is worth joining.

🍃

Banarasi Paan

Varanasi · Keshav Paan Bhandar, Lanka area

The betel leaf preparation of Varanasi is to paan what Champagne is to sparkling wine — a geographical designation of quality and technique. Sweet paan: rose petal preserve, fennel, cardamom, silver foil. Avoid tobacco varieties. End every Varanasi meal with one.

🥘

Sheermal & Nihari

Lucknow · Chowk district

Sheermal — saffron-infused flatbread made with milk and ghee, baked in a tandoor, traditionally eaten with nihari (slow-cooked meat stew left on the embers overnight). The Lucknow combination of Sheermal-Nihari is technically a breakfast dish; the best version is at Chowk's old Muslim quarter at 7am.

The only exception is photography inside certain temple complexes (Banke Bihari in Vrindavan strictly prohibits photography and has guards enforcing this). Respect this.

Safety Tips for Uttar Pradesh

🌊

Ganga Water — Do Not Swim

The Ganga at Varanasi and Prayagraj carries extreme pathogen loads — the river receives cremation ashes, sewage overflow, and industrial runoff from upstream cities. Ritual bathing is a centuries-old practice for pilgrims; as a tourist, avoid submerging your head or swallowing any water. Boat rides with no contact with the water are perfectly safe.

🌡️

Extreme Heat (April–June)

The UP plains can exceed 48°C in May–June — one of the hottest inhabited regions on earth during this period. Heat stroke kills — drink 4L+ water daily, avoid outdoor activity 11am–4pm, carry ORS sachets. If visiting the Taj in April–May, go at 6am and leave by 9am. Never visit ruins or open monuments midday in summer.

🚗

Road Safety

UP has some of India's highest road accident statistics. Avoid overnight road journeys outside the expressways. The Yamuna Expressway and Agra–Lucknow Expressway are well-maintained and patrolled; smaller NH routes are riskier at night. Always book a driver through a verified hotel or agency. Never hire from strangers at stations.

📱

Scams Near Monuments

The area around the Taj Mahal (Taj Ganj) has a well-documented history of gem scams — "government gem stores" promising tax-free export deals. There are no such stores; all are private. Similarly, men offering "free" temple tours in Varanasi often expect substantial payment at the end. Hire guides only through your hotel or the ASI-certified guide counter at the monument entrance.

🍺

Alcohol — Know the Rules

Alcohol is available in UP (unlike Bihar or Gujarat). Bars and liquor stores operate in Lucknow, Agra, Varanasi (in restaurants and licensed hotels). However, Mathura and Vrindavan have restrictions on meat and alcohol — most eateries are vegetarian only and serve no alcohol out of respect for the Krishna pilgrimage culture. Do not carry open bottles in the temple towns.

😷

Air Quality (Winter)

Varanasi, Lucknow, and Agra have AQI levels exceeding 300–400 in November–January due to crop burning in Punjab/Haryana, vehicular emissions, and fog trapping pollution. Carry N95 masks (not cloth masks — AQI this high requires filter-grade protection). People with asthma or respiratory conditions should consult a doctor before visiting in peak winter smog season (Nov 1 – Jan 15).

What to Pack for Uttar Pradesh

👘

Modest, full-sleeved clothing for temples (shoulders and knees covered at all shrines)

👟

Slip-on shoes — you'll remove footwear at every temple. Avoid complex laces.

😷

N95 masks (essential Nov–Jan; air quality in Varanasi + Agra frequently hazardous)

🧴

Sunscreen SPF 50+ and a wide-brim hat — essential even in winter at the Taj outdoor garden

💧

Reusable water bottle + purification tablets — sealed bottled water only; never tap water

💊

ORS sachets, Norfloxacin, Paracetamol, Antacid — street food reactions are common

📷

Waterproof camera bag or cover for Ganga boat rides (spray inevitable)

🧥

Heavy woollen layer for November–February — Varanasi ghat dawns at 4°C with river wind

💰

Cash in small denominations — autos, rickshaws, street food all cash-only; ₹500 notes often refused for small transactions

🔦

Torch for Varanasi gali walks at 4am (pre-dawn boat rides require navigating unlit lanes)

📵

Phone storage cleared — you will take more photos than any other trip in India

📖

A copy of the Ramcharitmanas (Tulsidas) or its translation — reading it at the ghats is an experience
