1. Geography & Landscape Overview
Srivilliputhur Megamalai Tiger Reserve was established in February 2021 by amalgamating two contiguous wildlife sanctuaries: the Srivilliputhur Grizzled Giant Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary in Virudhunagar district and the Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary in Theni district.
Stretching across high-altitude plateaus of the Southern Western Ghats, the sanctuary rises from rain-shadow dry thorn scrub at low elevations to dense montane shola forest patches and misty evergreen ridges above 1,500 meters.
3. Tigers & Western Ghats Biodiversity
Field surveys by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department and Wildlife Institute of India confirm breeding tiger populations utilizing the contiguous high-canopy corridors between Periyar and Megamalai.
Other notable flagship species inhabiting the reserve include:
- Grizzled Giant Squirrel (*Ratufa macroura*): Near-threatened canopy species centered around the Srivilliputhur riverine forests.
- Nilgiri Tahr (*Nilgiritragus hylocrius*): Endemic mountain goat occupying the high-altitude rocky crags of Megamalai.
- Asian Elephant (*Elephas maximus*): Herds utilizing seasonal corridors connecting Periyar and Anamalai landscapes.
- Lion-tailed Macaque & Nilgiri Langur: Specialist primates dependent on pristine rainforest canopy cover.
4. Visitor & Access Information
Ecotourism in SMTR is managed strictly by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, prioritizing low-impact nature treks and regulated view-point access in designated buffer zones near Megamalai and Highwavys estate.
Best Time to Visit: October through March when temperatures are mild and mountain streams are flowing.
