Chronicle of the Five Rivers

From Harappan Ropar & the Ten Sikh Gurus to Maharajah Ranjit Singh's Empire, Freedom Martyrs & Modern Punjab

Chapter I

Indus Valley Civilisation (Ropar) & Vedic Saptasindhu Era

The land of Punjab (Panj-Aab: Land of Five Rivers — Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Chenab, and Jhelum) is one of the world's oldest cradles of human civilization. Archaeological excavations at Ropar (Rupnagar) along the Sutlej River reveal advanced Harappan settlements dating back to 3000 BCE, featuring steatite seals, copper implements, and planned brick drainage systems.

During the Vedic Period, Punjab was known as Saptasindhu (Land of Seven Rivers), where the sacred hymns of the Rigveda were composed. Over the centuries, Punjab served as the northwestern gateway to the Indian subcontinent, witnessing Persian, Mauryan, Greek (Alexander the Great's battle at Hydaspes), Indo-Greek, Kushan, and Gupta dynasties.

Chapter II

The Ten Sikh Gurus (1469–1708 CE) & Creation of Khalsa (1699)

In 1469 CE, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born at Nankana Sahib, founding Sikhism based on the divine oneness of God (Ik Onkar), equality of all humans, and selfless service (Sewa). His successors standardized the Gurmukhi script (Guru Angad Dev Ji), built the sacred stepwell Baoli at Goindwal Sahib (Guru Amar Das Ji), and founded the holy city of Amritsar and Sri Harmandir Sahib (Guru Ram Das Ji).

Fifth Guru Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji compiled the Adi Granth in 1604 CE and attained martyrdom in Lahore. Sixth Guru Sri Guru Hargobind Ji introduced Miri and Piri (temporal and spiritual authority), constructing Sri Akal Takht Sahib. Ninth Guru Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji sacrificed his life in Delhi to protect religious freedom. On Baisakhi 1699 at Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib in Anandpur Sahib, Tenth Guru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji created the Khalsa Panth, bestowing the 5 Ks and bestowing eternal Guruship upon Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Chapter III

Banda Singh Bahadur, Sikh Misls & Sovereign Empire of Ranjit Singh

Following Guru Gobind Singh Ji's passing, General Banda Singh Bahadur established the first independent Sikh state in 1710, capturing Sirhind and abolishing feudal zamindari land ownership. Throughout the 18th century, despite brutal persecutions during the Chhota Ghallughara and Vadda Ghallughara massacres, twelve sovereign Sikh Misls (confederacies) rose to dominance across Punjab.

In 1799 CE, 19-year-old Maharaja Ranjit Singh (Sher-e-Punjab) captured Lahore and forged the unified sovereign Sikh Empire. Sprawling from the Khyber Pass and Kashmir to the Sutlej River, his empire was renowned for secular governance, military modernization under European generals, and gilding Sri Harmandir Sahib with pure gold leaf.

Chapter IV

Anglo-Sikh Wars, Freedom Struggle, 1947 Partition & Modern Punjab

Following Maharaja Ranjit Singh's death, British intrigue led to the Anglo-Sikh Wars (1845–1849) and annexation. Punjab emerged as the crucible of India's freedom struggle: the Kuka (Namdhari) Movement of 1872, the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre, the Ghadar Party, and supreme sacrifices by Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, and Shaheed Udham Singh.

The 1947 Partition divided Punjab between India and Pakistan, triggering massive population migrations. Through resilience, Punjab spearheaded India's Green Revolution in the 1960s, turning the state into the Granary of India. On November 1, 1966, the Punjabi Suba reorganisation established the modern state of Punjab with Chandigarh as its joint capital.
