Chapter I

Ancient Kalinga, Ashoka's Kalinga War (261 BCE) & Kharavela's Empire

The maritime kingdom of Ancient Kalinga occupied the fertile coastal plains between the Mahanadi and Godavari rivers. Known in epic literature for its legendary seafaring merchants (Sadhabas) who sailed to Java, Sumatra, Bali, and Sri Lanka, Kalinga built legendary wealth through spice trade and shipbuilding.

In 261 BCE, Emperor Ashoka of the Mauryan Empire invaded Kalinga. The fierce battle on the banks of the Daya River at Dhauli Giri resulted in devastating loss of life, causing such deep remorse in Ashoka that he permanently renounced armed conquest and embraced Buddhism. He inscribed his Famous Rock Edicts declaring universal peace and welfare. In the 1st century BCE, Emperor Kharavela of the Mahameghavahana (Chedi) Dynasty restored Kalinga's sovereignty, expanding its realm across India and excavating the rock-cut Jain ascetic caves of Udayagiri and Khandagiri.

Chapter II

Bhauma-Kara & Somavamsi Dynasties: The Birth of Kalinga Temple Art

Between the 8th and 11th centuries CE, Odisha experienced a golden age of art and architectural evolution under the Bhauma-Kara and Somavamsi dynasties. Queen Tribhuvana Mahadevi and subsequent Bhauma rulers patronized Tantric Buddhism, Shaivism, and Vaishnavism, laying the foundation for Kalinga style temple architecture.

Under the Somavamsi rulers (such as Yayati I and Yayati II), the city of Ekamra Kshetra (modern Bhubaneswar) transformed into a city of 1,000 temples. Master craftsmen erected the towering 180-ft spire of the Lingaraj Temple, the delicate Mukteswar Temple Torana archway, the Rajarani sandstone temple, and the open-air 64-Yogini shrine at Hirapur.

Chapter III

Eastern Ganga Dynasty & Suryavamsi Gajapatis: Puri & Konark Wonders

In 1078 CE, King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva founded the Imperial Eastern Ganga Dynasty, uniting Kalinga and Utkala into a vast empire. He commissioned the construction of the colossal 214-ft Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri, establishing Lord Jagannath as the supreme sovereign deity of Odisha and introducing the divine Ratha Yatra chariot festival.

In 1250 CE, King Narasimhadeva I constructed the world-renowned Konark Sun Temple (Black Pagoda), shaping the entire shrine as a 24-wheeled stone chariot pulled by seven galloping horses dedicated to Surya. Subsequently, Emperor Kapilendra Deva established the Suryavamsi Gajapati Empire, expanding Odia military influence from the Ganges to the Kaveri river while patronizing the Odia Mahabharata written by Sudramuni Sarala Das.

Chapter IV

Paika Rebellion of 1817, Utkal Sammilani & 1936 State Formation

Following the decline of the Gajapatis, Odisha faced Mughal, Maratha, and eventually British East India Company annexation in 1803. In 1817, forty years before the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny, the landed warrior militia of Khordha led by Commander Bakshi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar launched the historic Paika Rebellion (Paika Bidroha) against British extortionist land taxes and salt monopolies, capturing Khordha town.

In the late 19th century, Utkal Gaurav Madhusudan Das, Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati of Paralakhemundi, and Pandit Gopabandhu Das formed the Utkal Sammilani. Their relentless advocacy led to the historic creation of Odisha on April 1, 1936, as India's first state formed on a linguistic basis, celebrated annually as Utkal Divas.
