Madhav National Park, covering 375.22 square kilometers in the Shivpuri district of northern Madhya Pradesh, is one of central India's oldest and most historically storied national parks. Established in 1958 and named after Maharaja Madho Rao Scindia of Gwalior, the park was the summer capital and private shooting reserve of the Scindia dynasty. Celebrated for its expansive artificial lakes—Sakhya Sagar (a designated Ramsar site) and Madhav Sagar—and the fairytale hilltop George Castle built in 1911 for King George V, the park has entered a dynamic new era following the successful reintroduction of wild Royal Bengal tigers in 2023.

Location & Geography

The park lies on the northern fringe of the Central Highlands in the Vindhyan range. The landscape transitions from rolling rocky hills and flat-topped sandstone plateaus to expansive lake backwaters and gentle valleys. The two major lakes, Sakhya Sagar and Madhav Sagar, were engineered along the Manihari River in the early 20th century to create permanent water bodies that sustain millions of liters of water and support prolific aquatic ecosystems.

Geographic & Topographic Parameters

Coordinates: 25°25' N, 77°45' E
Elevation Range: 380 m to 480 m above sea level
Terrain & Landscape: Vindhyan sandstone hills, Sakhya Sagar and Madhav Sagar lakes, dry deciduous forests, and open grasslands

Area & Establishment

Historically reserved as the royal game preserve of the Gwalior State, the area was formally declared Shivpuri National Park in 1958 under the Madhya Bharat National Parks Act, and later rechristened Madhav National Park under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. In March 2023, following extensive habitat restoration, wild Royal Bengal tigers were reintroduced to the park from Bandhavgarh and Panna, restoring its apex predator.

Significance

Madhav is an essential link in the northern central Indian wildlife network, bridging the dry forests of Rajasthan (Ranthambore) with the Vindhyan forests of Kuno and Panna. In 2022, Sakhya Sagar lake was officially declared a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention, recognizing its critical role in supporting tens of thousands of migratory waterfowl and a high density of mugger crocodiles.

Wildlife

The park supports a balanced wildlife population. Predators include the reintroduced Bengal tiger, Indian leopard, striped hyena, golden jackal, jungle cat, and sloth bear. Herbivores thrive around the lakes, including chital, sambar, nilgai, four-horned antelope (chausingha), chinkara (Indian gazelle), and wild boar.

Flagship Species: Bengal Tiger & Mugger Crocodile

The Bengal Tiger and the Marsh Mugger Crocodile (Crocodylus palustris) are the co-flagships of Madhav. The newly reintroduced tigers have established territories across the lake circuits and hilly ridges. Meanwhile, Sakhya Sagar lake supports one of the highest concentrations of mugger crocodiles in India, where dozens of massive reptiles can be observed basking with open jaws on the rocky shores and sunny islands during winter afternoons.

Avian diversity boasts over 200 species. Sakhya Sagar is a winter paradise for migratory waterfowl, including bar-headed geese, greylag geese, northern pintails, common pochards, and painted storks. Raptors include the crested serpent eagle, shikra, and white-eyed buzzard.

Flora & Vegetation

Vegetation represents Northern Tropical Dry Deciduous Mixed forest and Thorny Scrub. Dominant trees include Kardhai (Anogeissus pendula), dhak (Butea monosperma), khair (Acacia catechu), tendu, and salai. The lake banks support extensive reed beds of Typha and Phragmites, providing vital nesting cover for waterbirds.

Safari & Visiting

Safaris are conducted in private or hired vehicles accompanied by certified forest guides. The signature drive leads up to George Castle, perched atop the highest hill in the park (484 m), offering breathtaking panoramic views of Sakhya Sagar lake and the surrounding forest. The Sailing Club and crocodile viewpoint along Sakhya Sagar allow peaceful wildlife observation from wooden platforms.
