Chapter I

Ancient Kangleipak Realm & Sanamahi Indigenous Faith (33 CE – 1709 CE)

The recorded history of Manipur begins in 33 CE with the coronation of Nongda Lairen Pakhangba, the first Ningthouba monarch of the Ningthouja dynasty at Kangla Fort. The kingdom was originally known as Kangleipak, surrounded by high mountain ranges and centered around the fertile Imphal valley and Loktak Lake basin.

During this era, the state religion was Sanamahi Laining, an indigenous animistic faith worshipping Lord Sanamahi (household deity), Lord Pakhangba (the divine dragon ancestor), and Lord Leimarel Sidabi (earth mother goddess). Sacred forest groves called Umang Lai were designated across all 7 Salai clans (Ningthouja, Luwang, Khuman, Angom, Moirang, Kha-Nganba, Sarang-Leishangthem).

In 1605 CE, King Khagemba introduced polo (Sagol Kangjei) to the world and constructed the historic Mapal Kangjeibung polo ground inside Imphal city, which remains the oldest living polo venue on Earth today.

Chapter II

Ningthouja Monarchy & Vaishnavite Cultural Golden Age (1709 CE – 1891 CE)

In 1709 CE, King Pamheiba (Garib Niwaj) ascended the throne. Under the influence of Bengali saint Shantidas Goswami, Gaudiya Vaishnavism was adopted as the royal state religion. Pamheiba expanded Kangleipak's borders across the Chindwin River into Upper Burma and fortified Kangla Citadel.

The reign of King Bhagyachandra (Ching-Thang Khomba, 1759–1798 CE) marked the golden cultural era of Manipur. Inspired by divine visions at Kaina hill, King Bhagyachandra composed the sacred Manipuri Raas Leela classical dance, crafted the traditional Kumil skirt costume, and consecrated the Shree Shree Govindajee Temple inside Kangla Palace.

Despite repeated invasions from neighboring Ava (Burma) during the Seven Years Devastation (1819–1826 CE), King Gambhir Singh liberated the valley in 1826 with the help of the Manipur Levy, restoring sovereign rule.

Chapter III

Anglo-Manipur War of 1891 & Colonial Era Resistance (1891 CE – 1944 CE)

In 1891, internal royal succession disputes led to British military intervention. When British Chief Commissioner James Wallace Quinton attempted to arrest Crown Prince Bir Tikendrajit and General Thangal inside Kangla Fort, fierce fighting broke out.

The British declared war, marching 3 military columns from Siliguri, Kohima, and Tamu. At the historic Battle of Khongjom on April 23, 1891, Major Paona Brajabashi and Meitei warriors fought to the death against overwhelming British artillery. Prince Bir Tikendrajit and General Thangal were captured and publicly hanged at Imphal's Bir Tikendrajit Park on August 13, 1891.

During British colonial paramountcy, Queen Gaidinliu led the Zeliangrong Naga movement (1930s) against British tax levies, for which she was imprisoned for 14 years.

Chapter IV

WWII Battle of Imphal, INA Tricolor & Indian Statehood (1944 CE – 1972 CE)

During World War II, Manipur became the primary theater of battle in South Asia. In April 1944, the Japanese 15th Army and Subhash Chandra Bose's Indian National Army (INA) launched Operation U-Go. On April 14, 1944, Colonel S.A. Malik of the INA hoisted the Indian tricolor flag for the first time on Indian soil at Moirang, Bishnupur district.

The 80-day Battle of Imphal at Red Hill (Lokpaching) and Shenam Pass ended in a decisive Allied victory, halting the Axis advance into South Asia.

Following Indian independence, Maharaja Bodhchandra Singh signed the Manipur Merger Agreement on September 21, 1949. Manipur became a Part C state, later a Union Territory, and finally achieved full Indian Statehood on January 21, 1972.
