Palamu
The Seat of Cheros

"Palamu ki dhoop aur mitti me Chero rajaon ki shaurya aur Koel river ki thandak ek sath ghuli hui hain."

Palamu is a historically rich district situated in northwestern Jharkhand, bordering Bihar. For centuries, it served as the kingdom of the Chero rulers, who built massive brick fortresses and successfully resisted imperial expansions.

The district headquarters, Medininagar (formerly Daltonganj), is named after Medini Ray, the greatest Chero king under whose rule the region saw unmatched prosperity. The North Koel and Auranga rivers trace through its dry, deciduous valleys.

Though the famous Palamu Forts lie technically just inside the border of the adjacent Latehar district, Palamu is the cultural guardian of this Chero heritage. Visitors can also explore Shahpur Fort and the scenic riverbanks of Medininagar.

The Chero Legacy in Daily Life
Palamu's identity is intertwined with the Chero dynasty. Their fort ruins are not mere tourist sites — locals still identify themselves by Chero-era village boundaries, sing ballads of Raja Medini Ray's battles against the Mughals, and maintain the Chero irrigation canals that water their fields to this day.

Bhojpuri Gamchha & Mauni Caps
Unlike the tribal Panchi Parhan belt, Palamu's culture leans Bhojpuri. Men wear the iconic cotton gamchha (shoulder towel) and woolen mauni caps during winter fairs, while women wear heavy jhumka earrings and colorful leheriya dupattas during Chhath Puja processions.
Diversity
Where Tribal and Mughal Worlds Meet
Palamu is a unique cultural crossroad: Chero fort architecture shows clear Mughal influence, while the villages surrounding the forts maintain pure tribal animist traditions. Chhath Puja, Muharram, and Sarhul are all celebrated with equal fervor in adjacent neighborhoods.
