History of Pinnawala
Founded in 1975 to care for five orphaned baby elephants found abandoned in the wild, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage has grown into one of Sri Lanka's most visited wildlife institutions. Located along the Maha Oya river near Kegalle, the sanctuary has recorded dozens of successful captive births over five decades.
The Famous Maha Oya River Bathing
The highlight of every visit occurs twice daily when the entire herd of over 70 elephants is guided down a village street to bathe in the rushing waters of the Maha Oya river. Visitors can sit at open-air veranda cafes overlooking the river while observing elephants splashing, rolling in the water, and grooming each other.
