The High-Altitude Mist Plateau
Horton Plains National Park is a windswept plateau at over 2,100 meters elevation in the central highlands, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site under the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka. Characterized by montane evergreen cloud forests, undulating tussock grasslands (patanas), and crystal-clear streams, the plateau is the watershed origin of Sri Lanka's three major rivers: the Mahaweli, Kelani, and Walawe.
World's End & Baker's Falls
The premier natural attraction on the 9.5 km loop trail is World's End, a breathtaking sheer cliff dropping 880 meters straight down into tea estates below. On clear mornings between 6:30 AM and 9:00 AM, the view stretches across the southern plains all the way to the Indian Ocean coastline. The trail also passes Baker's Falls, a 20-meter tiered cascade surrounded by rhododendrons and tree ferns.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is an early morning start mandatory for Horton Plains?
By 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM, rising thermal clouds routinely blank out the World's End cliff face in dense white mist. Arriving at the park gate by 6:00 AM ensures clear panoramic vistas.
