Nof HaGalil · Israel
Core attributes that define the character, architecture, and experience of Nof HaGalil.
Curated architectural landmarks, sacred sanctuaries, and cultural hubs explored in deep context.
In 1956, Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion conceived the establishment of a new Jewish urban center on the high limestone hills overlooking the ancient Arab city of Nazareth, as part of the governmental initiative to settle and develop the Galilee (Yehud HaGalil). Originally named Natzrat Illit (Upper Nazareth), the town was designed as a modern planned city with wide avenues, terraced apartment complexes, and green industrial zones.
The city absorbed successive waves of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe (especially Romania and Poland), North Africa, and later, during the 1990s, tens of thousands of scientists, engineers, and musicians from the former Soviet Union, who contributed immensely to the city's cultural and technological life.
Over decades, Upper Nazareth evolved into a distinct regional center, attracting Arab Christian and Muslim families from Nazareth seeking modern residential housing and quality municipal services. In 2019, the municipal government and residents voted overwhelmingly to change the city's official name to Nof HaGalil ('View of the Galilee').
The name change was chosen to reflect the city's peerless hilltop geographic setting and to forge an independent civic identity distinct from neighboring historic Nazareth. Today, Nof HaGalil stands as an admired model of daily urban coexistence, inter-communal cooperation, and commercial growth in the Galilee.
For generations of Israelis, Nof HaGalil is affectionately known as the 'Chocolate Capital' of the country. In 1958, the legendary Elite confectionery company opened its flagship chocolate manufacturing plant in the city's industrial zone. The sweet aroma of melting cocoa beans and roasted hazelnuts often wafts through the mountain breeze.
The factory produces Israel's beloved Shokolad Parah ('Cow Chocolate')—the red-wrapped chocolate bar that has been a staple of Israeli childhoods since 1934—as well as Pesek Zman wafer bars and Bazooka bubblegum, making factory tours a nostalgic pilgrimage for visitors.
The limestone soils and cool mountain breezes of the Lower Galilee ridge provide ideal microclimates for cultivating ancient Souri and Nabali olive cultivars. Local family-owned olive presses in and around Nof HaGalil produce cold-pressed, peppery extra virgin olive oils that have won international awards. Autumn harvest season (October–November) brings community olive-picking festivals where visitors participate in traditional stone pressing.
