Aniam · Israel
Core attributes that define the character, architecture, and experience of Aniam.
Curated architectural landmarks, sacred sanctuaries, and cultural hubs explored in deep context.
Moshav Aniam was founded in 1978 by a group of idealistic pioneers affiliated with the Moshavim Movement, many of whom were immigrants from the Soviet Union. The community took its name from biblical Aniam, a chieftain of the Tribe of Manasseh recorded in the First Book of Chronicles (7:19): 'And the sons of Shemida were Ahian, and Shechem, and Likhi, and Aniam.'
Initially, the settlers focused on high-elevation agriculture, cultivating deciduous apple, pear, and plum orchards, as well as raising cattle across the windswept basalt pastures of the central Golan Heights.
In the late 1990s, recognizing the unique artistic talent and tranquil mountain setting of the moshav, local residents conceived an ambitious economic transformation: establishing a purpose-built artists' village within the moshav. In 2004, Kfar Omanim opened its cobblestone boulevard to the public.
The venture proved to be a resounding success. Painters, ceramists, glassblowers, and silversmiths opened working ateliers, while many residents constructed luxury country zimmers (guest cabins) in their private gardens, turning Aniam into one of the most sought-after romantic weekend retreats in northern Israel.
The artists of Aniam draw profound inspiration from the raw, volcanic landscape of the Golan Heights. The intense black of basalt rock, the vivid ochre of iron-rich volcanic soils, the brilliant pink of spring cyclamens, and the sapphire waters of hidden canyon pools are reflected in the ceramic glazes, oil canvasses, and hand-blown glassware crafted in the village.
Unlike commercial tourist markets, visitors to Kfar Omanim interact directly with the artists themselves. Visitors can watch ceramists working on pottery wheels, observe silversmiths hammering filigree jewelry, or participate in private weekend mosaic and painting workshops.
Hospitality in Aniam is centered around the Israeli concept of the Zimmer (from the German word for room)—boutique bed-and-breakfast chalets built of natural wood and stone. Zimmer hosts prepare lavish Galilean-style breakfasts delivered directly to the porch: fresh eggs from local farms, homemade sourdough breads, artisanal sheep cheeses, freshly squeezed orange juice, and jams made from Golan berries.
Dining in Aniam and the central Golan emphasizes countryside bistros, boutique wine cellars, and local cheese farms:

Most studios in Kfar Omanim are open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. On Fridays, studios generally close by 2:00 or 3:00 p.m. for Shabbat. Many studios and cafes reopen on Saturday mornings to welcome weekend travelers.
Yes! The natural plunge pools of Nahal Zavitan and Yehudiya offer spectacular freshwater swimming. Be prepared for cold water (around 18°C–20°C) and rocky basalt bottoms; wearing sturdy water shoes or hiking sandals is essential.
While regional buses serve Aniam from Katzrin, having a rental car is strongly recommended to explore the surrounding nature reserves (Gamla, Zavitan, Yehudiya) and boutique wineries efficiently.
Rujm el-Hiri is a 5,000-year-old megalithic complex composed of over 42,000 basalt boulders arranged in five concentric rings. It was constructed during the Early Bronze Age and is believed to have functioned as an astronomical calendar aligning with the summer solstice sunrise.
