Cambodia's Cultural & Agricultural Heart
Situated along the tranquil Sangker River, Battambang is Cambodia's second-largest city and the capital of the 'rice bowl' province. Spared the heavy bombardment of wartime, it boasts some of Southeast Asia's best-preserved French colonial shophouse architecture, a flourishing homegrown arts and cafe scene, and the world-renowned Phare Ponleu Selpak circus school.
The Legendary Bamboo Train (Norry)
Constructed by resourceful locals using abandoned French railway tracks, a Norry is an ingenious lightweight wooden platform covered in split bamboo, powered by a small petrol lawnmower engine. Cruising at 30 km/h inches above the rail ties through rice paddies is thrilling; when two trains meet head-on, the train with fewer passengers is dismantled in under two minutes by the drivers, placed beside the track, and reassembled after the other passes!
Phnom Sampeau Bat Caves at Dusk
At the base of the sacred hill of Phnom Sampeau, visitors gather every evening between 5:30 PM and 6:00 PM to witness an awe-inspiring natural wonder: an unbroken, swirling black ribbon of over 5 million free-tailed bats exiting their limestone cliff cave into the twilight sky in search of insects.
