Ramanathaswamy Temple Char Dham Lore
Standing on Pamban Island in the Gulf of Mannar, Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple is one of the four supreme Char Dhams of India (alongside Badrinath, Puri, and Dwarka) and one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas. Lore recounts that Lord Rama consecrated the sand Lingam (Ramalingam) built by Goddess Sita to seek absolution from Shiva after the battle of Lanka.
22 Holy Theerthams Bathing Order & Rules
The sacred ritual begins with a dip in the ocean at Agni Theertham on the eastern shore. Devotees then enter the temple premises in wet clothes to be bathed sequentially with bucket water drawn from 22 holy wells, each possessing distinct medicinal and spiritual virtues.
| Theertham Number & Name | Spiritual Merit & Legend | Location inside Temple |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Mahalakshmi Theertham | Bestows wealth and prosperity (where Vishnu bathed). | Near East Gopuram entrance. |
| 2. Savitri & 3. Gayatri Theertham | Grants freedom from curse and spiritual intellect. | Outer first corridor. |
| 22. Koti Theertham | Final supreme well; grants liberation (Moksha). | Inner sanctum exit (strictly drawn by temple priests). |
