1. India's First National Park — History

Established in 1936 as Hailey National Park — the first national park in Asia — Jim Corbett National Park occupies 1,318 square kilometres of sub-Himalayan Bhabhar and Terai ecosystems in the Nainital and Pauri Garhwal districts of Uttarakhand. Located in India, The Master Jim Corbett Guide Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the region's notable destination destinations. It draws visitors seeking natural scenery, wildlife, heritage, or adventure in one of India's most geographically diverse states. The surrounding landscape reflects the ecological and cultural character of this part of India, shaped by its altitude, rainfall, and human history.

Named after the legendary British-Indian hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett — the author of Man-Eaters of Kumaon — who spent decades in these forests tracking and eliminating man-eating tigers and leopards that had terrorised remote Kumaoni villages.

In 1973, Corbett National Park was chosen as the launching site of Project Tiger — India's flagship tiger conservation programme initiated by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Today, Corbett houses the highest density of Bengal Tigers of any reserve in India.

🐯 The Bengal Tiger — Apex Predator of the Terai

A single adult male Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) in Corbett may patrol a territory of 60–100 square kilometres. Corbett's tigers are renowned for their large size — males averaging 220 kg and over 3 metres in length — and for their striking golden-amber coats adapted to the dappled Sal forest light. The best sighting zones are Dhikala's Ramganga river banks and Bijrani's grassland clearings at dawn.
