Mahabharata Roots & Anangpal Tomar's Lal Kot
Delhi's origin is historically identified with Indraprastha, the legendary capital of the Pandavas in the Mahabharata epic, sited near the present-day Purana Qila. The first documented stone city, Lal Kot, was established in the 11th century CE by Tomar Rajput king Anangpal Tomar II. Lal Kot formed the defensive core of early Delhi, featuring rugged mud-and-stone ramparts and rain-fed stepwells (Baolis) to capture runoff water from the surrounding Aravalli spurs.
The Delhi Sultanate & Rising Minarets
Following the defeat of Prithviraj Chauhan at the Battle of Tarain in 1192 CE, Delhi became the seat of the Delhi Sultanate. Under Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the Slave (Mamluk) Dynasty raised the towering Qutb Minar victory pillar. Subsequent dynasties—the Khaljis, Tughlaqs, Sayyids, and Lodhis—expanded the capital across several distinct cities (Siri, Tughlaqabad, Jahanpanah, Firozabad), leaving behind massive stone fortresses, tombs, and collegiate ruins.
The Mughal Hegemony & Imperial Shahjahanabad
The arrival of Babur in 1526 CE initiated the Mughal era. Although the capital shifted occasionally to Agra, Shah Jahan consolidated Delhi's imperial status in 1639 by building the walled city of Shahjahanabad (Old Delhi). Key features included the red sandstone Lal Qila (Red Fort), the monumental Jama Masjid, and the bustling moonlit bazaar of Chandni Chowk, positioning Delhi as one of the wealthiest cities in Asia.
British Raj Capital & the Modern Republic Seat
Following the 1857 Uprising and the fall of the Mughal dynasty, the British Empire took direct control of Delhi. In 1911, King George V decreed the shift of the imperial capital from Calcutta to Delhi, commissioning Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker to design the neoclassical legislative and administrative complex of New Delhi. Post-1947, the new independent republic adopted this sector as its national capital, hosting the Parliament, Rashtrapati Bhavan, and national ministries.
