The Soul of the Confluences
"Saran stands where three rivers meet, mixing the ancient soils of the north with the deep trade routes of the south."
The Depths of Neolithic Time
The Neolithic Settlement of Chirand
Early communities settle on the banks of the Ghaghara, using bone and stone tools, and weaving early textiles.
Mauryan Elephants Trade
Emperor Chandragupta Maurya establishes the Sonepur plains as a primary purchasing ground for war elephants for his armies.
The Battle of Buxar Aftermath
Saran comes under the direct administration of the British East India Company, which establishes administrative grids for saltpetre collection.
Ahilyabai Holkar's Renovation
Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore funds the renovation of the Hariharnath Temple in Sonepur, building stone steps and courtyards.
District Tripartition
The large Saran district is divided into Saran, Siwan, and Gopalganj to improve administration and canal development.
The Dust of the Bazaar
Asia's Largest Cattle Fair Commerce
The Sonepur Cattle Fair starts on Kartik Purnima. While the trade in elephants has decreased due to wildlife protection laws, the fair remains a major market for horses, dogs, cattle, and birds.
The fair grounds cover several square kilometers, hosting community theaters, toy markets, and agricultural exhibitions that support the rural economy.
- Asia's largest cattle trade hub
- Devotional bathing on Kartik Purnima
- Massive community theaters and rides
Traditional Terracotta & Replicas
Inspired by the ancient discoveries of Chirand, local potters in Saran create terracotta toys, clay utensils, and replicas of Neolithic bone tools.
The pottery is sold during the Sonepur Fair and local festivals, keeping the ancient clay craft heritage of the riverbanks alive.
- Neolithic-inspired terracotta designs
- Earthy clay toy molding
- Festive pottery production
Riverbed Cultivation & Harvesting
The sandy banks (Diara) deposited by the Ganges and Gandak rivers are used to cultivate sweet, high-quality banana varieties (locally called Chiniya bananas).
The harvest is loaded onto river boats and transported to wholesale markets in Patna and Chhapra, supporting riverbank farmers.
- Rich river silt farming
- Chiniya banana cultivation
- Boat-based river transport
