The Chola Maritime Expeditions & Ma-Nakkavaram
In the 11th century CE, Emperor Rajendra Chola I utilized the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a forward strategic naval base to launch his expeditions against the Srivijaya Empire (modern Indonesia). The Tanjavur inscriptions of 1050 CE refer to the Nicobar islands as 'Ma-Nakkavaram' (the land of the naked), which subsequently inspired the modern European name 'Nicobar'.
European Settlements & Maratha Naval Operations
European colonization attempts began with the Danish East India Company, which established a base in the Nicobar Islands in 1755, naming them the Frederiksøerne (Frederik Islands). During this era, the Maratha naval commander Kanhoji Angre also used the islands as a hidden anchorage to raid British East India Company shipping routes along the Coromandel coast.
The British Penal Colony & Cellular Jail Construction
Following the Uprising of 1857, the British Empire established a permanent penal colony in Port Blair to house political prisoners. Initial gallows were raised on Viper Island. Later, in 1896, construction began on the massive, seven-winged Cellular Jail, designed on Jeremy Bentham's panopticon system to prevent inmate communication and enforce hard labor.
World War II Japanese Occupation & Netaji's Flag Hoisting
During World War II, Japanese forces occupied the islands from 1942 to 1945, building concrete bunkers along Port Blair's beaches. In December 1943, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose visited the islands, hoisting the flag of the Azad Hind Government and renaming them Shaheed and Swaraj Islands. In 1956, the islands officially became a Union Territory of India.
