Frequently Asked Questions

Banke Bihari Temple is the most visited and most famous temple in Vrindavan. Built in 1864, it enshrines a black-stone deity of Krishna in the Tribhanga pose. The darshan style is unique — the curtain opens and closes every few minutes to prevent worshippers from being overwhelmed by the deity's gaze. Photography is strictly prohibited.

Madan Mohan Temple, built in 1580 CE by Kapur Ram Das of Multan and associated with Sanatana Goswami, is considered the oldest surviving major temple in Vrindavan. It stands on a hill overlooking the Yamuna and is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.

Vrindavan is said to have over 5,000 temples, ranging from grand structures built by medieval kings to tiny shrines in private courtyards. Of these, around 25 are considered historically and architecturally major and are included in the traditional pilgrimage circuit.

October to March is ideal. The most spectacular time is Holi (March), when Vrindavan celebrates for a full week before the national festival. Janmashtami (August-September) at ISKCON and Banke Bihari is extraordinary. Avoid May-June when temperatures exceed 45°C.

Photography rules vary by temple. Banke Bihari Temple strictly prohibits all photography including phones. ISKCON Vrindavan allows photography in most areas. Radha Raman, Radha Damodara, and most Goswami temples prohibit photography during aarti but may allow it at other times. Always ask before photographing.

The ISKCON temple in Vrindavan, formally known as the Krishna-Balarama Mandir, was established by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and inaugurated in 1975. It is one of the finest examples of white Rajasthani marble temple architecture and is the global headquarters of the Gaudiya Vaishnava mission outside India.
