1. UNESCO World Heritage Geography
Nestled in the high Garhwal Himalayas of Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, the Valley of Flowers National Park (87.5 sq km) sits between 3,200 and 3,600 metres altitude in the transition zone between the Zanskar and Great Himalaya ranges.
Discovered in 1931 by British mountaineers Frank Smythe, Eric Shipton, and R.L. Holdsworth while returning from Kamet expedition, Smythe wrote the acclaimed book The Valley of Flowers, introducing this fairy-tale botanical wonderland to the world. In 2005, UNESCO extended the Nanda Devi National Park World Heritage designation to include the Valley of Flowers.
Fed by the rushing Pushpawati River — which emerges from the Tipra Glacier — the valley floor blossoms into a riot of colors between July and August when over 500 species of wild alpine flowers carpet the mountain slopes under towering snow peaks.
🌸 Frank Smythe's Discovery (1931)
"It was impossible to take a step without crushing a blossom. The valley was an emerald trough filled to the brim with flowers of every hue — blue poppies, golden lilies, pink balsam, and white anemones." — Frank S. Smythe, 1931
