Overview

Nestled in a tranquil, amphitheater-like mountain valley in West Sikkim, Yuksom ('The Meeting Place of the Three Learned Monks') is the spiritual and historic cradle of the Sikkimese kingdom. It was here in 1642 CE that three venerable Tibetan lamas—Lhatsun Chenpo, Ngadak Sempa Chenpo, and Kartok Rigzin Chenpo—arrived from Tibet in fulfillment of Guru Padmasambhava's prophecy and consecrated Phuntsog Namgyal as the first Chogyal (religious king) of Sikkim, founding a royal dynasty that endured for over three centuries.

The Yuksom Heritage Trek links the town's most revered cultural landmarks along peaceful, forested footpaths. The premier walking route ascends a steep, pine- and chestnut-clad hill spur to Dubdi Monastery ('The Hermit's Cell'). Founded in 1701 by Lhatsun Chenpo, Dubdi is recognized as the oldest existing Buddhist monastery in Sikkim, perched solitary in an enchanted clearing surrounded by ancient prayer flagpoles and towering evergreen trees.

Descending into the valley floor, the trail leads to the sacred Norbugang Coronation Park. Here, beneath an enormous ancient cryptomeria pine tree, stands the stone Norbugang Throne where the coronation ceremony took place, alongside the sacred footprint of the high lama pressed permanently into a rock slab and the historic Norbugang Chorten holding sacred relics.

Completing the circuit, walkers visit the tranquil, prayer-flagged waters of Kathok Lake (Kathok Tsho), where lamas consecrated the holy water used in the royal coronation. Serving also as the primary gateway to the high-altitude trails of Goecha La and Kanchenjunga Base Camp, Yuksom provides an unforgettable, gentle immersion into the sacred spiritual soul of Sikkim.
