Overview

Covering an expansive basin between Bandipora and Baramulla in northern Kashmir, Wular Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in India and one of the largest in all of Asia. Fed by the meandering Jhelum River and glacial streams flowing down from Mount Haramukh (5,142m), Wular is designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, playing a foundational role in the hydrology, ecology, and cultural heritage of the entire Kashmir Valley.

The Wular Lake Circuit Trek combines serene shoreline dyke walks with an exhilarating climb up the forested hill ridge at Watlab to the venerated 15th-century shrine of Sufi saint Baba Shukruddin. Perched atop a commanding spur high above the lake, this hilltop vantage offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic vistas in northern India: the colossal shimmering expanse of Wular spreads out beneath your feet, dotted with traditional wooden fishing boats (shikaras) harvesting water chestnuts (singhara) and lotus roots (nadru).

In the middle of the lake lies Zainul Lank, an artificial stone island created in 1444 CE by Kashmir's enlightened ruler, Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin ('Budshah'), featuring ancient ruins of a royal palace and mosque that can be reached by a picturesque boat crossing from the shore.

For birdwatchers and naturalists, Wular is an international sanctuary: during the autumn and winter months, hundreds of thousands of migratory waterfowl—including mallards, pintails, common teals, greylag geese, and Eurasian wigeons—arrive from Siberia and Central Asia, filling the tranquil waters with vibrant life and avian calls.
