Overview
Perched on a high mountain terrace overlooking the deep Gori Ganga river gorge in the eastern corner of Uttarakhand, Munsiyari ('Place with Snow') is the historic gateway to the ancient Johar Valley trade route connecting India with western Tibet. Nestled directly beneath the towering, sheer granite and ice pyramids of the five Panchachuli peaks (ranging up to 6,904 meters), Munsiyari is widely celebrated as one of the most dramatically situated mountain settlements in the entire Himalayan chain.
The quintessential trek from Munsiyari is the ascent to Khaliya Top (3,500 meters). Starting from the roadhead at Balanti bend (about 9 km above Munsiyari town), the trail climbs steadily through a dense, primeval forest of moss-draped Himalayan oak, blue pine, and several species of rhododendron (locally called burans). As you gain elevation, the trees give way to subalpine birch (bhojpatra) and finally open onto the vast undulating alpine meadows (bugyal) of Khaliya.
At the summit ridge of Khaliya Top and its higher vantage point at Zero Point (3,700m), trekkers stand face-to-face with the Panchachuli group. The five peaks—named after the cooking hearths (chulis) of the five Pandava brothers—rise so close that you can hear the rumble of distant seracs calving onto hanging glaciers. Looking west and north, the panorama extends to Hardeol (7,151m), Trishuli (7,074m), Nanda Kot (6,861m), and Rajrambha.
In winter from late December to March, the entire bugyal is buried under 3 to 5 feet of powdery snow, transforming Khaliya into one of India's finest, most scenic winter snow trekking and snow camping destinations.
