Overview
The Ghuttu to Panwali Kantha Trek follows one of the most storied, romantic, and historically important mountain trails in Uttarakhand. Long before motorable pilgrim highways were carved into the river canyons, this high-altitude ridge route was the traditional walking pilgrimage path connecting the holy shrines of Gangotri and Kedarnath. Pilgrims would walk for weeks across the high ridges, avoiding the suffocating summer heat and malarial mosquitoes of the lower river valleys.
Departing from the picturesque agrarian village of Ghuttu in the Bhilangna River valley of Tehri Garhwal, the trail ascends steeply through dense primeval forests of moru oak, rhododendron, and deodar before breaking out onto the boundless, undulating grasslands of Panwali Kantha (3,500 meters). Stretching for over ten kilometers along an exposed mountain spine, Panwali Kantha is one of the largest and most magnificent alpine bugyals (meadows) in Asia.
In springtime, the vast green turf is carpeted in thousands of blooming purple primulas, yellow buttercups, and blue gentians. In early summer, local Gaddi shepherds and Gujjars bring herds of sheep, goats, and water buffaloes to graze in the high pastures, their seasonal stone huts (chaani) dotting the meadow folds.
Standing atop the Panwali ridge provides an uninterrupted panorama of the entire Garhwal Himalayan crest. To the north, the glaciated massif of Mount Kedarnath, Kedar Dome, Chaukhamba, and the Badrinath peaks forms a monolithic white rampart against the azure sky, making this route an unforgettable wilderness journey through authentic Himalayan pastoral culture.
