Overview
Perched in the tranquil hills of western Dehradun district overlooking the Yamuna and Tons river valleys, Chakrata is a historic cantonment town founded by British Colonel Hume in 1866. Far removed from the crowded commercial hill stations of Mussoorie and Nainital, Chakrata is celebrated for harboring some of the densest, most pristine deodar (Himalayan cedar) woodlands in the entire Indian subcontinent, where colossal trees reach heights exceeding 40 meters and cast deep, fragrant shade across the forest floor.
The Chakrata Forest Trek combines two contrasting walking experiences: the tranquil downward canyon hike to the magnificent Tiger Falls (Kerao Pachad in the local dialect), and the exhilarating ridge ascent to Deoban (2,865m). The Tiger Falls trail winds down from Chakrata through stepped terraced orchards and pine groves, dropping into a hidden gorge where a natural waterfall plunges 50 meters down a sheer mossy cliff into an emerald swimming hollow.
Culturally, this region is the heartland of the Jaunsar-Bawar tribe, who trace their ancestry directly to the Pandavas and Kauravas of the Mahabharata. Trekkers encounter picturesque hamlets built from interlocking timber beams and carved stone slabs, where ancient multi-tiered temples dedicated to the deity Mahasu Devta showcase intricate Himalayan woodcraft.
At higher altitudes toward Deoban ('God's Own Forest'), the trail climbs through ancient rhododendron and brown oak trees to reveal a breathtaking 180-degree panoramic vista of over 50 prominent Himalayan summits, including Chaukhamba, Bandarpunch, Swargarohini, and the Kedarnath range.
