The kings of Tripura funded Tagore's pathbreaking Visva-Bharati University in Shantiniketan during its initial years of financial hardship. In return, Tagore immortalized the royal history of Tripura in his classic novels *Rajarshi* and *Mukut*, and his famous plays *Bisurjan* and *Rajarshi* were inspired by the state's ancient temple legends.
This deep bond helped transform Agartala into a hub of literary and cultural renaissance, bridging the gap between Bengal's classical art and the tribal traditions of the hills.
The Shift to Agartala
For centuries, the royal capital of Tripura was located in Udaipur (now in Gomati District). However, as conflicts with the Nawabs of Bengal and neighboring tribal chieftains intensified, Maharaja Krishna Kishore Manikya decided to move the capital. In 1838, he shifted the court to New Agartala (present-day Agartala) on the banks of the Howrah river. The new location offered better connectivity to East Bengal and allowed the royal family to build the modern palace structures that define the district today.
