Introduction

The Palace of the Glassy Waters

Sepahijala District, located just south-west of Agartala, is a scenic region where royal architectural heritage meets dense wildlife conservation. The district's crown jewel is Neermahal (meaning 'Water Palace'), an extraordinary royal summer palace built in 1930 by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya. Standing directly inside the waters of Rudrasagar Lake in Melaghar, it is one of only two water palaces in all of India (the other being Jal Mahal in Jaipur), blending Hindu temple towers and Mughal domes in a striking red sandstone and white marble design.

The palace is reached by boarding local wooden boats at the lakeside. As you glide across the water, the palace towers grow larger, reflecting on the glassy surface of the lake. Historically, the palace served as a cool sanctuary for the royal family, who held boat races and musical performances on the terraces. Today, Rudrasagar Lake is a protected Ramsar wetland, welcoming thousands of migratory ducks and waterbirds during the winter months.

A short drive away lies the Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary, a dense forest of sal and bamboo that serves as a vital center for wildlife preservation. The sanctuary is famous for breeding the endangered Clouded Leopard and Phayre's Leaf Monkey (locally called the spectacled langur, the state animal of Tripura). For travelers, Sepahijala represents a unique slow travel experience where you can explore silent rubber forests, watch primates jump through bamboo, and watch the sun set behind the floating domes of Neermahal.

Neermahal Palace

Constructed over six years by Martin & Co. of Calcutta, this palace contains 24 rooms, including a royal assembly hall (Durbar), private apartments, and open garden courtyards. It is divided into two sections: the eastern side (Swargodyan) for family gardens and the western side (Rajghat) with a direct boat landing for the king's speedboats.

Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary

Spanning over 18 square kilometers of natural forest, this sanctuary holds a zoo, a deer park, and botanical gardens. It is world-renowned for its successful conservation and captive breeding program of the Clouded Leopard, alongside wild populations of Phayre's Leaf Monkey and capped langurs.

🛶

Rudrasagar Lake

A vast natural lake surrounding Neermahal. In winter, the water body is dotted with migratory birds like pintails and pochards. Visitors can hire traditional wooden rowboats or motorboats from the Melaghar ghat to cross the lake to the palace.

🌳

Rubber Plantations

Sepahijala is the heart of Tripura's commercial rubber industry. Roadside stretches are lined with dense, structured plantations of rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis). Visitors can walk through these silent, shady corridors and watch local workers collect latex in small coconut shells attached to the bark.

"Neermahal does not stand on the shore; it floats in the lake like a royal marble ship, casting its red reflections on the waves."

The Boatmen of the Maharaja

Local folk history in Melaghar tells that Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, a great lover of sports and the arts, built Neermahal not just as a resort but to host the annual royal boat races (Jal Utsav) of the state. He brought traditional boat builders and rowers from East Bengal and gave them land surrounding the lake, creating a tight-knit community of boatmen.

These fishermen served as the Maharaja's private water escort. According to legend, during the royal stays, the boatmen would sing traditional Bengali *Bhatiyali* (boatman songs) under the moonlit terraces, their voices carrying across the silent lake waters to the Durbar hall where the king hosted artists and poets.
